Easy fix to this. Use the curve. Bump your 9s to 10s, your 8s to 9s, and so on. You'll feel better, and I'm sure the folks you're rating would feel better too.
A more logical argument for the curve...
Your subjectivity changes, and a picture might be a 5 to you in the evening, but a six in the afternoon, depending on lighting at your voting station, your mood, and a hundred other things. The static thing in each challenge is the relationship between one picture to the next. So the curve...I'm a fan, and I'll try to encourage anyone else to be a fan :)

I vote on a curve... then go back after the preliminary voting is done, make adjustments, and make more comments.

Shouldn't you judge the entries aginst each other rather than on a subjective view of photos in general? I mean the challenge was triangle and the 400 entries should be looked at as a group, and marking should be on that group so that the best in the group should be awarded higher marks and so on. The challenges shouldn't be judged against other challenges... Confusing myself now but I think I know what I mean .., Hope you do!

I just roll a 10 sided die and see where it lands. Thats what it feels like with the variety of scores :)

Scores on this one has to have one of the wildest swings I have seen to date.
My score (not votes) has ranged between 5.5 to 8.0 and everywhere in between.
Comments and fav say it shouldn't - but does..

?

Mine just creeps up slowly...then one person hammers it back down. Sort of like a nail that won't stay down.

funny...

my submission has had next to no variance whatsoever. I'm not even sure if it's moved more than .1 either direction. *lol*

I have a feeling Brad's got a pretty sweet shot coming, (one that's a bit out on a limb and adventurous - and somewhat non-traditional)

It looks like you missed the "10" that I was supposed to get! ;-)

Which would you prefer: A) lower score does laundry and irons everything, even socks, for a month, or B) lower score HAS to do something "romantic" once a day for a week?
The answer matters...

The second is certainly a better idea! Since I'm married to a Yorkshireman ( not the most romantic creatures on the planet!) it could be quite a challenge for him. Trouble is - he's too busy taking photos for this site! That's why I decided to join up as well. If you can't beat 'em..........

Well, make him take romantic photos of you :) for a week. If you can't beat them, alter the game... [/quote]

It must be a woman thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea, maybe it's just me too, but I was also surprised that there were not more shots that really struck me as *spectacular*. I only gave 1 pic a "10" (but I'm pretty conservative about that all the time), 4 9s, 15 8s, 50 7s, the rest were 6s & 5s, some 4s and a few 3s (I usually don't score shots below 4 and I've never given anything below a 3).

I'm sure that I'm not the best judge in the world, but I do try to be evenhanded and consistent about my voting for every challenge. I think that's the best thing I can do.

I rate on a curve. There has to be at least 3 10s in there somewhere among 400 shots. try to fin 3-10 9s. At least 10 8s... Right now everything is scored 4-8. Over the next few days I'll bump (up only) and comment...

Ha! I'm the one who screws up your spreadsheets! :)

I have been on the site for almost a month now, finally submitted my first photo to this contest and have a 5.2 so far (80 votes), which doesn't bother me much... but only 2 comments! I was hoping more people would comment and let me know what they think or what'd they'd do different. I thought there were some great photos in this contest but the voting seems iffy. Oh, anyway, Hey everyone. lol

I tend to vote and then go back to make comments. Perhaps that is why more comments come later than sooner.

I do the same thing.

Not only do I make comments, sometimes I edit the score as well.

The worst from my first or second challenge one year ago!

I seems to me that I don't understand what "triangle" really is just as I misundrestood the term "late night" last week!

The only good thing is that my score is going upwards now. Earlier this day I was heading down to 3 something!

I just don't get the scoring around here. I really liked my shot. All well. I wouldn't have voted mine to ribbon either, but jeez. I like the idea of voting on a curve. Time to spread the love ;^)
