Here's the photo... think about it for a sec before readong on.

I got hammered for it being "too hot". But that's what I wanted to show. For you Catholics, you may know the story of the guy who saw the Virgin Mary in the desert and he had in his pancho some roses.
Well, here's what the guy is looking at
Do you think it's still too hot, or was it that bad a photo to begin with? This is a photo I would NOT submit in a DPChallenge for fear of being slammed with 1's.

My personal feeling is that the black border accentuates the "washed out"-ness of the photo. I understand the feeling that you are trying to portray. I would try using a lighter border or not one at all. I slightly notice the light spot on the lower part of the photo. I think this adds to the "feeling". Again, I think taking out the border would make this spot stand out more. Otherwise, it gets lost. Just an idea. Your other pictures are beautiful. I like the clouds in the background. |

Hiya Tony --
I took the photo and played with it a little in this really primitive photo editor we have at work (where I am now). I cropped out some of the rock, and upped the contrast just a little. And changed nothing else. I wasn't really sure what you mean when you say "hot" -- I'm assuming it's referring to the exposure.
Here they are in pBase so you can compare: //www.pbase.com/ruthiek/too_hot
The ONLY things I can say about the crop and extra contrast I added are (1) the highlights from the sun show better -- which gives the camera flare more meaning and increases the sense of heat (for me); and (2) taking out some of the rock in the lower right corner and upping the contrast allows more focus on the hands and face (again, in my opinion).
I think it's a great photo however you look at it (particularly the angle you shot it at) -- you might play with it a little in other ways to see if you can make it just a little more dramatic without decreasing the "hot" quality that you liked so much from the beginning.

Tony:
I think the image is alright, but it does look too washed out. I think it might look better in black and white. Just an idea! The other photos are really nice too, but they would be better if all of the spikes coming out of Mary were fully in the frame.
