I have to mention my friend Lonny Shavelson. I helped him prepare his first two books for printing, and in doing so he taught me a lot about photography.
He photographs a lot of people not normally the subject of the camera, although in recent years he's "branched out" into more general photojournalism as well.
He's authored several books (not all pictures) ranging in topics from portraits of people who've been involved with the US "mental health system" (I'm Not Crazy, I Just Lost My Glasses) to the sorry state of health of the US (Toxic Nation) to assisted suicide (A Chosen Death). Besides his photojournalistic career, he also has a "day job" as an emergency room physician.
His first book (Personal Ads Portraits) is hilarious, but I think it's out of print : ( |

my 'favorite' has more to do with whom i think i can learn the most from at a particular moment. right now, that would be Jack Leigh. he lived to shoot, leaving behind a most remarkable documentary of the world he lived in.
coming close behind him would be ed, m b, jon, and aznym.
