I just arrived in Austin and I'm trying to determine the best spots to see the sights. I've never been to Texas. I want to get some good shots of the city. I'll be here for 4 nights on business, but I'll have some free time at night. I definitely plan on visiting the state capital. Anyone have any other recommendations for places to visit in and around Austin? Thanks. |

If your free time is mostly in the evenings, you'll want to stay mostly in the center of town, I think. Try the Botanical Gardens at Zilker Park, and the bridges over Town Lake. The bats under the Congress Ave. Bridge are hard to get pictures of, but they're pretty cool to see. Downtown is always good for interesting characters and cool lights and colors.
Hope that gives you a decent place to start! I'm sure others will have ideas, as well. |

I live in Houston but my daughter goes to UT. I have been there many times. Go to 6th St downtown at night. Lots of great live music. Go to the top of Mt Bonnell on the west side of town. Great views of Lake Austin and the city. The Texas State History Museum on MLK at the south edge of the UT campus. LBJ Presidential Library and Museum on the UT campus near the football stadium. Go west of town out Hwy 2222 to Lake Travis and watch the sunset at The Oasis restaurant. They have multi-level decks on the bluff overlooking the lake and the view is beautiful. Too bad you won't be there over the weekend. My daughter gives tours at the Tower on the UT campus but they only do that on weekends.

Great jazz club at the Elephant Room...can get some neat close ups of some of the players. Very relaxed and informal on Monday night...but gets going late. |

thank you for those who suggested some spots to see in Austin. I was able to get to the capital building, but nowhere else due to time constraints. Oh well. Here is one of the shots looking up into the dome. the capital building is immense and amazing. I am particularly happy with the symmetry of this shot.
