Hi All,
Currently I have a SONY DSC-P8 digital camera which is good for normal use. I also have a Nikon F-50 with 35-80 & 80-200 Lenses I want to upgrade to a Digital SLR. Budget total $800-900. I am looking for a body + 28-80 or 28-100 Macro lens.
Help most welcome |

With your set-up, I would recommend taking a look at the Nikon D50. It's in your price range, will most likely take your two existing lenses, and you have the whole line up of Nikkor lenses to choose from.
You could also try and find a good used (or maybe even new) D70 in that price range (or a little bit higher).
Just remember that going to dSLR isn't just the cost of the initial purchase... lenses and accessories will keep you spending for years to come.

Stay with Canon and spend as much as you can afford. Don't skimp on the class either. Stay with the L series lenses. |

Well, for the rest of us on *this* planet, I'd be inclined to suggest exactly what Artyste did. Unless of course, money is no object and you can afford $1000-$2000+ lenses every time the whim strikes you.
It's comments like the one above that really frustrate me. The OP said his budget is $800-900, not infinite. I sometimes wonder if some of the L glass elite ever read us regular folks' posts at all in their entirety. |

If you already own Nikon lenses and are used to the Nikon controls, there is no reason to switch to Canon. The main differences between the two systems are ergonomics and controls. BOTH brands take excellent photos. Canon people are just ridiculously loyal or something. I'd definately recommend a D50 or D70. By staying with Nikon you'll learn the camera faster because it will be more like your F50 and you'll be able to use your existing lenses. There's certainly nothing wrong with Canon, but if you switch the learning process will likely be slower since it'll be different from your F50 and you'll probably be stuck with one lens unless you up your budget. |

the quality of canon, and there R&D is at least a couple steps ahead of Nikon.
the 300D is not a bad choice especially with the budget you are after.

Dont listen to these Canon freaks, Nikon is the way to go, you already have the lenses and the D50 kit is the right choice for you, you might want to consider the D70 too now that the D70s is out it will be cheaper. Under no circumstances switch to Canon its a step backwards.
GO NIKON GO!!!
Always check out the 2ndhand market you can get more cam for your money the best thing about the Drebel is the built in water squirter to amuse your friends but it aint worth the Xtra cost.. |

alright, people.. can we have *one* thread where we just offer intelligent, constructive advice to someone without it being an "us against them" bullshit contest?
Please?
For once?
This is ridiculous.

I agree with you Artyste
FROM A MINORITY CAMERA OWNER! (theres only 28 of us on DPC)
Number one ... he has Nikon Lens... which I checked and they will fit the D50 or D70. This is the way for him to go. He can save money up front.
Number two ... unless you are giving him replacements for these, let him enjoy a camera that they will fit on.
Number three ... we all have opinions on our cameras, and everyone thinks that theirs is the best. Tomorrow...there will always be one better than what you have now...and unless you can afford to replace you camera every 6 mmonths or so...let us who cant...get what we can afford and let us enjoy what we have without people saying its crap or saying negative things about it.

I'd look at nikon as others have said.
As for the macro lens...if you are using your current nikon lenses, then go for one of the prime macro lenses by nikon, sigma or tamron (the 90 to 105 range primes). If this is not in your budget, then look at extension tubes.

Since your existing lenses will work on the D50 or D70 (I had wondered if they would), then the Nikons are your obvious choice. I personally would suggest that you go with the higher of the two (D70, isn't it?) even if it eats up your $800-900 budget for the time being, and save up to purchase the wider lens you said you want sometime later. Just my thoughts; good luck with your purchase, I'm sure you will love the dslr. |

If I were you I would try the D Nikons first. If you don't like anything about them then try the rest. Go by your "feel". You are the one who is going to use it and you cannot go wrong with any of the reputable names.

While this is true right now, it may not be in years to com and all us Canon folk dealing with the criticisms of the Nikonians :X
--
If you're happy with the Nikon lenses that you already own, then as everyone else mentioned, I would suggest sticking with them. Since your budget is $800-900, this is particularly attractive since the body alone could wind up costing well over half of that - if not the whole thing.
I picked up my camera used for $600 with the kit + a small memory card, which was an extraordinary deal at the time. You may be able to find a similarly good deal on a Nikon in your area - if you're willing to really check it out and make sure that everything is working okay before you buy. I found my deal on craigslist.

Don't be a fool!!!!
You must buy a Canon D1s Mark II, it's only $8000, and make sure you get all of the expensive L lenses. Don't bother with those cheap L lenses that cost less than $2000, otherwise if you do or get some horribly inferior product like Nikon, you're photos will look like vomit!!!
Forget composition and lighting. Tha't all bunk theory.
It's brand name and price of your equipment that counts most of all!!! :)
Just kidding.
I agree with others that D50 would most probably fit your bill the best. Unless there is a feature from the D70/s that you are looking for, why not save some moeny? The D50 kit is $900 and the body is $800, I think.
Especially if you like the Nikon lens you have. You might want to consider the 18-55 kit lens since 28mm is not that wide on a dSLR.

As others have said, if you're happy with your lenses, stick with Nikon. However, the D50 and the D70 have a 1.5 multipler for the lenses, so a 35mm lens will be effectively about a 50mm. Consider buying the "kit" lens (18-55?) with the body for the wider angle. (Unless you can stretch your budget and get a wide angle zoom) |

While Canon is ahead in some, perhaps most aspects, Nikon is ahead in at least one aspect -- wireless transmission of images directly from the camera, a feature much appreciated by photojournalists.

I guess if you can't afford the best then go ahead and get 2nd best. I have used many different digitals, and the Canon line is the tops in my opnion.

When I was buying my first serious digital camera I was reading threads everywhere and constant reveiews after reviews. It became dizzy stuff and your opinions change that often it makes the decision really tough. The camera will find you, and do go and physically try them out (ones within your budget), it has to feel good and comfortable in your hands. I was always "geting" a nikon but that was out the window, when by chance I picked up a canon pro 1. What a fantastic camera ! Have no regrets. :-) |

I agree!!! I also agree with megryan, both companies obviously produce high quality products. If they didn't there wouldn't be this debate. Kinda like Intel vs. AMD, or Radeon vs. Nvidia. it all comes down to whether or not the camera feels right to you or not. Other considerations do come into play after you have actually taken them for a test run. (probably in store... can't think of any store in their right mind thatwould let you take it out without paying for it.... )In Artvet's case there's the lenses he already has for his F50. Since he already has those it would be kinda silly to go with a Canon where he'd have to buy new lenses to replacee ones he already has. So, unless the canon just plain feels more intuitive I would recommend going with Nikon. |

I'd suggest looking at the D50 if budget is a big concern. Or the D70. Most of the features on the D70s will be available via the firmware update in June. There should be some awesome rebates available on the D70 as Nikon clears out the model.
