Hmmm, first thing I can think of is someone else in the house was using download bandwidth during the test. If you can, make sure no other computers are using the web, and re-run the test.
Another possibility is that the cable "node" that you are on is busy, and was busier during the download test. Try running the test at a time of day when few folks will be on, and again, repeat several times.
If you're still getting the same funny result, give your cable company a call. You should be seeing much faster downloads than that, though they may tell you "we don't guarantee any specific speed, blah blah blah."

I'm on the only computer connected to the cable in the house, so I'll try again when traffic might be less. Leave it to me to be so "unique." Thanks for your help! :o)

Adelphia told me I needed to unplug my modem for 60 seconds and then plug it back in. That was to get faster speeds though. I don't really understand how you get faster uploads.

I get 10Mbps download and 1Mbps upload speed. Best of all it's free!!!!
I work for a cable company in the New York area. It's one of the perks. Oh, I also get free cable. |

| I'm currently at 31 kbps, but it feels like 31 kb per hour. Since it's free internet service, I really have no right to complain. |

Heh, you got color. I'll break out my old AT&T PC6300 with the 8086 processor and pretty green-phosphor monitor. Come to think of it I don't think I even had a modem for that, LOL.

With cable modem your speeds should be around 3000/364 average unless your ISP offers a higher speed. I can understand the download dropping if you are using multiple computers but it still does not explain the big rise in upload speed. Even though upload speeds do flux.????? Nows the time to upload files, shouldn't take long at that speed. |

Supposed to have 100MB fiber optic line here (it was that or ISDN) I have had people out to check the line and they say i get 44mb to the line, Im in Japan so the American bandwidth sites do not really work for me I get different results from Megapath e.g. up-1575/down-786 then when i try the others it would be something like up-350/down-4667. Then when i try the one in Japan i get a mental result like up-1mb/down/38mb, but I think its all a big Myth anyway because apart from Microsoft and Symantic there is a tight limit on bandwidth anyway so even if you had a DL of a trillion billion MB you could still only download at the sites limit of around 100k-600k, but we always fall into this type of thing (including myself) I can remember spending hours and days tweaking with DRTCP to get the extra .000000001k better then next morning its completely different. I never check my download speed anymore I remember the headaches and dont wish them to return again.
If it works don't fix it..... |

I had a Zenith terminal (no CPU) and a 300 baud modem ... first used it to communicate with a DEC PDP 11/70 (and later VAXes) running UNIX, before the era of graphical user interfaces. I did no programming though ... I was doing the precursor (pun intended) to desktop publishing. |

The test shows 796 down, and 17 up.
Seems like I should have more than 17 up, but whatever. I seriously have the slowest cable connection I've ever seen. I'm glad I'm moving in two months because it's been hell with such slow internet. And I can get rid of Time Warner, and get something steady like DSL or something. |

| I'm also with Road Runner, and of late I have been getting about 5200/768 kbps using a download manager like ReGet. Without, I get closer to 4500 kbps sustained on a single connection. |

The words "fast" and "my internet" are mutually exclusive. I'm certain I'm the Brown Ribboner in this category, unless we have any DPC members in the far reaches of the Upper Amazon Basin, and then it's a maybe.
Right now: 16.8 kbs. Occasionally it gets down to 9600 kbs. A really GOOD connection for me is 26.4 kbs. What makes it seem all the slower is that I am often on DPC from the PC's in the breakroom at work, which smoke. As I've said before, all my challenge scoring takes place at government expense!
