For a final project in one of my classes I am going to try to show the side slip angle of a car under low speed and high speed turning... To do this, I want to mount a video camera on my car in order to clearly see the top of the front tire, the road, and the side of my car (to establish the direction of my car with respect to the road). I really don't want to weld anything to my car or do damage to it and preferably not my camcorder.
To those of you who have mounted a camera to your car succesfully, can you share your tips or experiences? I've seen a link for a system that mounts via suction (I think), but I can't afford much in the way of equipment.
Thanks for any help

Mav, I used a small helmet camera once a few years ago. I used some velcro and tie straps, but this thing only weighed about 1/2 a pound.
investigate the area of the car where you want to put the camera and look for places where you can use some u bolts and other items to rig up a mount securly.
I know some have used bunge cords and their tripod. maybe a small table top tripod would work

Thanks for the replies so far. My current plan involves a small tripod and possibly duck tape. I'll probably use my Canon S30 for the video since its small and light.

True Story...
last weekend I was going in to the office...
there were 4 guys in a small beat up car with a stickypod on the hood with a HD video camera. They had been pulled over by the local Transit cops...(the transit cops in Dallas are "more agressive" than the city cops by far)
After a few minutes there were 6 Dart(transit) cops and 4 Dallas cops and they had the people out of the car sitting on the curb.
I talked to the building security supervisor (I work in the Bank america building... the one with the green neon in all of the Dallas skyline pictures)... seems like driving around with a video camera on your car in todays world makes you a "person of interest". He said that those guys were completly checked in every goverment database possible...
They were finally after about 1.5 hours let go...
so the moral is ... clear car based shooting with the cops first I guess.

Try the Bogen Super Clamp (see it Here) . I've used it to clamp to the windshield of my Jeep several times. The best part of it is that you can mount a tripod head on it. Also if you want to shoot from the car try the Kirk Window Mount. |
