My wife would like an MP3 player for Mothers day. She walks and works out at the gym( no jogging/running) and bike rides.
I know the ipod is the best thing since the long playing record, but...
I want:
Low price
solid state (compact flash i think they call them - in other words -no HD)
512Mb ram or better yet CF/SD/MM card expansion
prefer not needing an interface program, or at least a non invasive one (i can drag and drop just fine thank you very much)
PC compatible
Prefer AA/AAA batts, not some USB only charging device.
Neat features I have read about....
-FM
-FM recording...tempting....very tempting if i can use the FM recording as any old MP3 (as in move it to my car via CD...NO DRM issues...)
-voice recording!
-The Rio Cali i think has a stop watch function...interesting uses for that I think.
So what have you all used and like or hate?

The Rio Cali has a bad track record of failing just after the warranty period. Also, it has a bad track record of failing due to water damage, mainly from people exercising and wearing it on their arm. This "water" damage is not covered by warranty. I'm not talking about super sweaty people, either. Just normal walking about on a warm day can cause it to fail.
I've had great luck with both Creative products and IRiver products. Both are compatible with many different file types. I like the IRiver 790 the best, and it is reasonably priced now. It will go 17 hours on one AA battery, and acts also as a digital recorder and FM tuner. The 790 is only 256mb, but I'm sure you could find something with a different number that was larger. |

My daughter has the 790, and it has served her well. She snowboards with it, LOL, and it hasn't died yet. We use a 2500mAh rechargeable battery, and it lasts an entire evening. I think the 17-hour quoted battery life is optimistic.

IPod Shuffle. Accessible, light, reliable. Size of a stick of gum. 99 dollars. Armband, etc. etc. That is the preferable name in mobile MP3.

The Creative Muvo is interesting.
The ipod seems to be 1 Gb for $99, a good deal, but is only an mp3 player, and can one have playlists or folders or does it randomlyplay all the songs on it? The armband is a $30 option...
The Iriver 795 is $140 or so. I'd like to keep the price under $100.
Some of the RCA lyra models look interesting. Radioshack has a couple w/ rebates for $50 and $70, and they take MMC/SD cards so memory size is up to me, or i could have 2 cards and swap song sets with my wife when i borrow it for bike riding 9as opposed to DL'g a gig of songs again and again...)
Any daytome folks have input or experiences with MP3 players?

I have no experience, but the kids recently pointed out to me in the walmart circular the new mp3 player which is like an ipod but being manufactured by walmart for under a hundred. Dunno if that helps... :)

| I recommend reading some reviews over at cNet.com -- they have a pretty strong section on digital music hardware. |

I was looking at cnet last night (until my net connection vanished...)
There are SOOO many models out there, and some of the cnet pages seemed OLD, so i am not sure if i am even looking at currently available units!
I may swing by walmart after work tonite. We are getting a bestbuy, due to open in a week or so, so i can check out the player ther when i check out the new store.
The forge models seem to have a nice feature set and price, but the quality is suspect from what cnet and DPC folks say.
