Well I didn't do very good for the challenge but he are some out takes of my second attempt at portraits. Please feel free to comment. The protarit were done for a little girlz first communion.
This is the one the family is using as thank you cards
They are blowing this up to 16x20
Nice candid.
And my entry. I used this one because it was the first image I worked on and I had no time left (It was 11:59)
Yes I know people said the looked dark but on my moniotor they looked awesome. So please don't just comment that they are dark. |

What a cute little girl! I'm sure it was a nice event for the family.
In a portrait, our eyes tend to go first to the eyes, and then to where the most light it. In some of the images above, the two don't match. The eyes are in the dark and the dress is lit, for instance. I like the candid best because light and eyes match nicely--and there's a cute mischievous smile to boot.
I hope that was helpful. Good luck!

I tried a workshop for you. I simply used the Render Lighting Effects filter on her face and shoulders. Now the light matches the eyes.
For a formal portrait like this, I might also go in and select the eyes and whiten them.
Nice pose, by the way, and the girl's demeanor informs me that you're pretty good working with models!

To echo dsidwell (nice camera btw:-)), to have the main light from above can lead to a very angelic effect, but if you have the eyes in the deeper shadows, it can turn pretty sinister.
Different canvas, but brilliant lighting artist here: //www.warpedspace.org/lightingT/part1.htm
Hope it helps.

Thank you for the comments. I do agree that the dark eyes set a mood but the mood I was looking for was more of a somber setting.
Thanks for a the good stuff said.
Anyone else wanna comment? |

If the images are already done and you dont intend to redo them then I would suggest trying to lighten under and around the eyes. If you plan to retake these in the future I would try different lighting set ups and then you can see what works best for you and your little angel :)
