I've been reluctant to post because I know that a link to our latest picture shows up with our name. My first submission was so awful. I came in last place and I'm embarrassed. However, I am happy with my negative space entry and so far in the voting, it's doing a WHOLE lot better. And, I got my very first real positive remark and that is what I'm extremely happy about. Thank-you to that person who really made my day today.

I was just going to say, however, that since the definition of negative space is sooo broad, the comments are very interesting (I've recieved 5 so far). One comments that there is no negative space and another praises my use of negative space. ARRG!!

Way to go Connie, I kind of know how it feels. I had the magic ten in my first commmets.

I do not think you should be embarrassed by your entry. I liked the composition, and the color. But you either needed better focus, or a tripod. In fact, I think you should reshoot it, it is a great idea, nad would make a neat picture.

I got this comment today:

"Nice picture, but what does all that space above mean? I do not see any importance in it."

Does anyone else feel like this person didn't read the challenge description?

I mean, one could argue that this commenter just doesn't like *my* use of negative space, but it almost sounds like they don't even understand the concept.

Ahwell.

Last place is a good place to start. Then you get the advice, you apply it and move on up. I started out really good, with a fairly great score, and now my photos are scoring really low...It's a bummer that as I try to apply the "helpful" information from the critiques, I keep getting worse. LOL. I'm thinking about going back to point and click. LOL. Oh well. I'm glad you seem to be having a nice time here. Don't be embarassed about last...Someone does it every week. :) May just be me this time...lol.

This is really of the topic, but...

This is what I got today.

9/16/2002 (6:58:00 PM) - there's no thought this is a very nice photo but been stagged keeps it from getting a higher vote from me. very good never the less.

I am glad it is appreciated, but was this supposed to be a candid negative space challenge?

Thank-you very much. Actually, I've had a lot more experience with my 35mm SLR camera. I wish that there was a place JUST like this for a scanned photo contest. If there is, I haven't found it. I just have a cheap digital camera that has been a feat in itself to get a decent picture from. Also, I don't have Photoshop. All this will probably change, though, as I'm getting addicted to this new hobby. Just maybe, I'll figure out a way to have really good pictures using cheap equipment. Anyway, I appreciate the support and good feelings. I'm really having a lot of fun. In the meantime, I'm getting in the truck to find photo ops in "My Corner of the World". Actually, I'm finding this is harder than the Negative Space. Too much to choose from. LOL

Maybe it was "Candid, Negative Space photos taken by a Fruit or Vegetable", and we all misinterpreted it !

Well, at least I studied up on Negative Space and determined my thought on the subject. I'm sure that there will be even more interesting comments. I made a few comments on someone's negative space, but I explained my definition of it in relation to the challenge...therefore explaining the way I voted or commented the way I did.

If Photoshop is out of the budget for you (as it is with many of us), consider Photoshop Elements. Inexpensive, and a great program.

And, if you have too much to choose from for this week's challenge, I am envious!! I can't think of a thing !

Actually, many of us thought you were not in last place. Now, all you have to do is practice with that digital and learn it's quirks. As somebody said, try the shot again, but using the comments you received as a starting point for improvement. I'll bet it's a lot better. I for one would like to see it.

Hang in there with the rest of us, and you will see improvement in your work. Don't always about your score - it will vary a lot. Worry about whether you liked your photo, and whether you thought it was better than last week.

I think i got a comment from that same person...
"okay negative space. There's a pattern to the background and its a bit distracting and takes away from the value of the neg space. the picture is pretty good nonetheless"
Does neg space have to be totally blank?..Actually there is no pattern to mine just colors.

...Hey, thanks! I will give that a good looking at. Right now, I'm using Microsoft Picture which I'm real familiar with, but I hear you guys talk about all the fancy stuff you are doing to your pictures and I know I don't have it. Thanks for the suggestion! Wow, I LOVE this place.

Jim, well you don't have to give me much coaxing to try it again. I will start right now...LOL

Maybe he/she just questions your use of negative space, because he/she doesn't see any meaning or something of "importance" in it. That's how I would read the comment, but I agree that it also could be from someone ignoring the challenge ;-)

Connie, the only direction to go from here is up... My 1st entry scored 103 out of 112, so I know the feeling :) A little unsolicited advice (I can never resist giving it) :

A tripod will make a "tremendous" difference to most shots...

Keep on shootin' :)

Last really isnt that bad. By Wednesday, you get over it! :-) then, you have bragging rights. see there are just as many last place pictures as first; maybe we should get a little black ribbon or something. And remember, like someone else said, you can only move up from there.

Good luck with "Corner!"
