I have an 'error '99'' issue with my backup 10D. It doesn't happen with every shot but more and more frequently (about 20% of the time), regardless of lenses mounted, which are all Canon.

I understand stand that ''99'' is a bit of a catch-all code indicating anything from soiled contacts to a broken shutter. All I can say is that it usually occurs in portrait orientation or when the camera is tilted toward strong light. Shutting the camera off and back on appears a temporary fix. Taking the batteries out and reinserting them, cleaning all contacts, dis- and remounting the lens, all these additional measures have made no difference.

I suppose I'll have to send the body in for repairs, and, potentially, need to have the shutter replaced.

If anyone else has had the same issue, I'd be very interested in how it was resolved, how long the repair took and what Canon charged for a a shutter replacement? (This 10D, btw, is no longer under warranty).

Thanks in advance.

Could this be, for instance, that the lens mount is a little loose and allowing the contacts to part in this orientation?

Well it feels very tight and effects all lenses I mount on it (EF 50 mm f/1.8 II, EF 17-40 L, EF 70-200 f/2.8 L). Only turning the power off and on again will return things to normal, temporarily.

Does this occur with more than one battery (BP-511/512)? I never had this particular problem with my 10D, but have had some anomolies with different batteries.

Good point. I used two 511s, when this happened. But I have 511As as well. I'll try those this afternoon.

-Well, it's not the batteries. The problem did not go away with 511As loaded either. :-(

From an EOS 20D manual, don't know if this is the same info for the 10D, but...

"'Err' '99': This error may occur if you use a non-Canon lens and the camera or lens does not operate properly."

So specific, eh? :)

Well from reading your post, looks like they're all Canon lenses, so never mind. :)

I have been getting 'Err' '99' in my 10D, but it only happens when my CF card is full. I have a 1gb card that will still show available shots on it according to the screen, but as soon as it gets full, I get 'Err' '99' instead of "CF Full" or whatever. That's the only error reading I've had so far, and even after formatting the card umpteen times, it happens every time I use that card and it gets full. The final shot I take before the error occurs is always corrupted as well. I figure it's something wrong with the card and not the cam, but the card works fine after I take it out and delete the final shot. Maybe it's just a strange anomoly. Or maybe it's just me. It would figure. ;o)

I use 1GB cards as well, but the error pops up quite frequently and when the card is empty as well. It seems to me, the ''99'' appears whenever the camera cannot accommodate a task. A corrupt card, too, may introduce a parameter or a combination of parameters it cannot read and/or execute. ?

Chuck Westphal (Canons PR-man at robgalbraith. com) has this to say: "...Error '99' is non-specific until the camera gets hooked up to the Service Department's computer equipped with the diagnostic software required to identify the specific problem at hand. Therefore, it's impossible to say that your camera has a defective shutter before it's examined by a technician..."
