I liked my 78th finish. I might have done better if I had just used Federal returns, but I really didn't feel like undoing all the staples holding each year together. Too lazy. The one good thing is I was able to move some of my silly early challenge entries over.

For some strange reason most images seemed "tacky"

Submitters did 'attack' the challenge with vigor.

outtake i didn't use this one because i though it lacked the depth
tack picture were fun to do .. i figure i used 700+ tacks though only 20 or so were in the final submitted image .. i still have to 'pluck' all the tacks off the magnet .. ughh.. |

Yea! My first challenge, and I got above a 5! I'm savoring having an average over 5 while it lasts...
Thanks to some particularly helpful constructive comments early on, I was inspired to redo the shot the day after the challenge started:
Original as entered:
New and improved:
Modifications included custom white balance, brightened it a bit, and sharpened it a bit. Thank you, commenters! :-)
James
P.S. I didn't get a picture of my setup, but it was basically just a wine glass full of water and tacks tilted back a bit with a desk lamp directly behind it.
P.P.S. In case anyone is having a weird "deja vu" feeling, I posted a version of this message last night in another ancient thread that I think nobody reads anymore. |

Easy - get a BIGGER magnet to get them off the "smaller" one.
Yeah, I know...if I'm gonna' act like a turd, I better go out and lay in the yard...

Maybe an electro-magnet,,,,,then turn the power off and vacuum them up, then stick your hand in the bag, and get a photo of the pain you are experiencing, and if its only a tiny tiny little prick you can use it in minimalism,,, and.......its ok.....someone just found the "shut down" button...... :O) |

I'd like to get some after challenge feedback on my entry
I think the only critique I got was oversharpening, all the other comments were great. I thought this would do well, I thought this was one of those types of images that would score high here... I put a lot of effort into the lighting, composition, perspective, blur, etc.. any constructive critiques on ways I could have improved this shot?

I liked it and gave you a 9, but don't really have any critique's or comments. I just don't really know what I'd do to it. |

I think a deeper DOF would have been better (to me) -- The fact that the dude is out of focus is distracting -- everything is close enough that it should all be in focus.
I am certainly no expert though -- I'd really like to know how you got the tacks balanced like that! Very cool!

I have to disagree. I think the focus is perfect, using the shallow dof to put the primary subject in perfect focus and leaving the wooden guy in the background. Though aero hasn't mentioned this as her reason, I'm quite sure she meant it that way. I don't think anyting is oversharpened either. Shot looks perfect to me, and it's useless to critique it. It would be a good subject to use to discuss what you should do. But what do I know, I'm a newbie? |

Thanks. This was what I was going for. To blend woody into the background and make the tack the main subject of the image. I did however get a great piece of feedback from doctornick who told me to move woody further away from the background and to set a smaller apeture. I'll remember this next time... always learning :o)

Aerogurl,
The lighting is just a tad harsh. Not overly so, but it would look better in softer light, in my opinion. There are some deep shadows on Woodie that I don't particularly like. Otherwise, great idea and composition! I agree, the selective focus on the tacks works best. |

Thanks alot all for my score as well. I actually was still editting up to the deadline...I was going to submit a shot cloning out the mirror line but ran out of time...here is my setup. It really wasn't as time consuming as some thought. Thanks though for some great comments.

Thanks, stephen, barry, and neil! you're comments were spot-on and are highly appreciated. i couldn't have asked for better post-mortems.
this entry was a great example of not paying attention to all the details. granted, even if i had, it probably wasn't ribbon material, but the simple things ya'll pointed out could easily have made a full points difference in the final result.
and, just in case anybody cares, the title came from the classic timbuk 3 song of the same name
;-)
