There was a fire in the wee hours just a couple blocks up from work. Easy pickings for some candids this morning with the sun at a very low angle ~7:30am.

I'm especially wondering what Photoshop 7 work could help these out. I really have to find some time to get up the learning curve in it. |

Well, thank you very much, Jen, it makes me feel great to know someone likes what I caught!
:-)
I just wish I had some decent zoom, but I'll make do with what I've got. |

Great shots Strikeslip Fire Fighters love to be photographed. As you can see the Training Chief and the PAO Officer waste no time in showing off new equipment to the press.

good shots strikeslip, my only critique would be that i kinda wish the backgrounds were blurred since there isnt much going on in them and they seem to be competeting for attention.

Good shots...and where as B&W is a good medium for these and better than a traditional color. I think instead of a complete B&W see if you can use levels contrast and de-saturation to get an image that somehow maintains a touch of color. Like a black & white photo with aspects of coloring and shadow. There is a strange "color tone" around fires.....I wonder if there would be a way to apply that. (Not sure if I made any sense.)

Thanks!
OK, here's a shot at blurring the bg and making it 'sort-of' black & white...

Ug, I just looked at it on a bigger screen, it's horrible, colour relics all over and halo around the guys, I hate it. :-(
Jen, in Photoshop I use Hue/Saturation and decreased most of the colours, except for the Canadian flags, which I increased a bit. I duplicated the layer and then erased the guys from it, then blurred that layer & burned on it in the bottom left. I am absolutely awful at burning, though I've gone through the DPC tutorial. Most people here can burn amazingly well, I'm really jealous about it.

The lighting on the faces is too harsh in the first one, maybe a little dodging/burning on that.. the second one is nice, the third one is ok but kinda out of focus or something. I think the main problem I have is that the background is too distracting... nice candids :)
