I love photography. I know you already know that. But I just realized I pay attention to things differently than I used to. I just went to the conference room window here at work to see what sunset looked like, and was surprised by how far away the sun is from where it was last time I photographed sunset from that window. I probably never would have noticed the seasonal movement of the sun before.
It really made me feel like time is passing ;)
But I love it anyway. Talk about expanding my horizons.

Good observation.
I think anyone that is in tune with themselves, have realized at some point the world no longer looks the same after spending a bazillion hours behind the lens.
We have a tendancy to "see" things, as we are pretty much in composition mode most of the time, thus paying far more attention to life around us than most people. Every turn of the head brings a new vision, rather than just a sight.
That is my opinion anyway.

That is definitely true. I see so many "good photos" out there, just as I'm wandering around. Makes me wish I had a tiny camera implanted in my eye sometimes. My lens is so much better at seeing and remembering things than my brain.

There is something that we suffer from though:
We are so intent on perfecting a shot, we have all too easily forgotten to just point & shoot in our own families. Those frozen moments in time, though not our "best" work, will turn into our best work in years to come.
Don't let the daily memories slip by for the sake of perfect lighting & following the rule of thirds in the composition - heck - tilt the darn camera, click and create an imperpect moment preserved forever. |

Im thinking the lens would be doing the seeing but the sensor would be remembering... lol

Had me thinking and wondering how many "really" just point & shoot anymore?
As an example, I dragged a few shots out of the basement as examples of snapshots that I can find a ton of stuff technically wrong with, yet are images that are frozen moments in time that can never be replicated.
Revert to snapshot mode once in a while. You will thank yourself later. |

i ALWAYS point and shoot. Maybe that is why my score isnt that great, but i always like to see what expressions i get etc... I have only ever once set up a shot that i can think of.

i'll agree that there is a difference between setting up a shot of a shampoo bottle and capturing a family moment, but i don't see anything wrong with trying to make a snapshot a little less snap-shotty...
none of these were taken for challenges--they were all shot for the family scrapbook...

Absolutely - if at all possible.
Guess I was suggesting not to pass by a shot just because it isn't optimal. Far too easy to think too technical at times.
Rush is wonderful btw!

I just posted a thread about snapshot and this is what i took as a snapshot. which came to me to have something more than a snapshot.
I have more shots that where snapshots and i think they are really nice to look at.

you know, when i'm browsing books of prints at the library, i'm always struck by just how much i enjoy the shots that are missing something technically. you know, landscapes with washed out skies, people on porches with blown out backgrounds, etc, etc. the point is, the images have something that grab you, and there was something about them that justified them being a part of a printed collection, but, all the same, there are 'flaws' in each image that would get marked down in a challenge.
so, i think what you're saying (in far fewer words than me) to stop thinking about every shot as a challenge shot, but go on and capture the moment.

Thanks for sharing those and the countless shots you have and will share with us! |

accident report to the insurance co......'drove off road while taking photos of the scenenery, but it was a great shot!!!' Hmmmmmmm don't think I'll do that one again!!!!!
I go past an inlet on the way to work and the reflections in the water are just awesome!!!! Especially usually when I'm late to work, no time to stop!

I think the word snapshot applies when others look at your photos of family etc. Family members look and see a moment they can recall, a record of an event that was captured.
I use my camera like a machine gun, shooting off all the time when something is happening. Whether it be social events or just a grandchild standing by an open door. All are moments that so easily slip by, especially if I were to wait until everything was technically correct.
It is knowing where to draw the line between perfection of a moment and perfection of technicality.

I would have to agree with you on that one Andi... Ever since I have started taking pictures, my outlook on the world has completely changed. I find myself, everywhere I go, camera in hand or not, composing pictures. I look for interesting subjects, perspectives, and angles, whether I like it or not. It is becoming a sort of second nature.
