Do you know what this one is? (One of my outakes.) I didn't know until I asked... |

Terry -- I didn't take this thread as people 'complaining' about the number of comments they have received. More of an observation that possibly comments are lower this week for some reason (because of number of entries? or other reason?). I guess I can only speak for myself -- I definitely was not complaining about the number of comments I have received this week. I will continue to post quality comments as my schedule permits -- please don't forget the quality vs quantity issue when you start discussing comments. I could generate lots of three word comments to make my ratio look better, but don't see the point in doing that...

I got 7 comments so far and I usual don't need more then that. Someone usual will give me good feedback. I am not commenting on photos any more because I don't have enough time. I did for a while and wasn't able to get done voting. I did'nt think it was fair to vote on a portion of the photos. I am now trying to focus on voting on all the photos. I am going to start trying to comment on photos after the voting is done. It is tough. I have four kids and 3 are in sports and the other is in diapers. I have to find time in the morning, nap time or when everyone is in bed. Good luck on the challenge.

Not all the comments in the thread read as complaints (some were quite complimentary actually), but some were. My point was simply that the situation can be easily improved. I'd like to see as many people as possible try to make at least as many comments as they receive each week. To those who feel they can't leave quality comments, the best way to develop this ability is through practice. The more comments you leave, the more comfortable you will feel making the comments, and you may be surprised to learn that the comments you make on others' photos stick with you so your photography improves as well.

I've just been on a commenting spree... then I looked up and saw that I had only commented on 20! I'm still going to try to comment on more, but all my comments this week are long and hopefully useful.

I for one, have received some really good comments, and I try to do the same with my comments. If I feel as though I can't comment constructively, I usually don't take the time. I know the feeling when I think I am going to get advice, and I get "nice pic". Thanks for the compliment, but I think comments should be more than that.

I am in the same boat Sonifo...I have the same number of kids doing the same things (and yes, one in diapers). I had to check and make sure you weren't my wife there for a minute!! There are times when I do have a lot of time (While at work), but most of the time its just a few minutes here and there. I have almost no time at home though. Once the kids go to bed my wife usually plays games until she goes to bed so I'm stuck to early morning voting (at 4:00am) and I just don't have many constructive things to say.

Maybe no news is good news or could be bad news. I know we need some controversies but there is none. The pictures I thought as a whole where excellent. |

I felt the comments were slow to start coming in this week, but now I have recieved so many excellent ones that if they stopped right now I would be quite happy. (27 so far) The quality of comments I have recieved are the best I have ever seen.
Also, I have taken a lot of time to review the photos this week, and it has been a pleasure. What a great field! (The more times I view some of these images, the better they get...many are very subtle in their appeal.) Have also left more comments this week than I have in the past, and will probably be doing a few more. I really believe that the more you comment the better you get, and I'm feeling more comfortable about giving them as well. |

First of, I don't believe anyone was complaining abt the low number of comments. It was interesting to see though that lots of us experienced the same thing.
Second, all in all I don't find comments particularly helpful. When voting starts, I eagerly anticipate the first few comments to see from what direction the wind will be blowing. Other than that, many comments seem to contradict one another. Sure, it's nice to get some wonderful comments. But really, in this photog journey, as in pretty much everything else, you're on your own.

Mark,
If there's some aspect in particular about a photo that really stands out to you, complimenting the photographer on that aspect can be helpful as well. Comments like "I especially like your use of color" or "I like the way the lines lead the eye into the main subject" may serve as a validation that something they worked hard on came out well, or point out a lucky accident that they may wish to learn to duplicate in the future.

I state for the record
I have recieved 95 comments, and given 372 I did sit out a few challenges though.
This challenge I have made 48 comments on 111 votes given. Hopefully my comment style has improved, as alan eluded to earlier.
I actally have found that once I start writing, it does not take too much longer. I have had to do most of my voting at home, that is why I am not done yet.

I've had 23 comments out of 214 votes, so I'm not complaining. I thought it was interesting to read some of them this week, since some of them liked one aspect while others commented that they would have liked that aspect done the opposite way (it's hard to describe that without saying which one is mine!).
I went through and voted for all of the shots earlier in the week, and I commented on a few. I had to stop, though, when I got to the point where I wanted to add comments like, "Yep, it's a tomato alright!" Or "Looks good enough to eat!" I think the reason there may not be as many comments this week is that so many of the shots are really quite similar, and that it's not always easy to come up with something unique to say about each one this time... |

There are also so damn many good ones. I cannot believe it. I hope everyone is printing their shots out.

How about this? Try comparing your own profile numbers: Forum comments vs. Photo comments. {....large amount of backspacing.....} You might find where your time is being spent.

Ahhhh, rambutans! In my opinion, the most sensuous fruit on the planet! Like a grown-up's lychee. |

Along the same line of commenting, I have left comments on pictures in the hopes that the photographer would view the comments AFTER the judging closes and respond. I checked all the comments I left recently and NONE of them have done so. |

Hey Focus! O.K. if you find my photo, I guarantee you a response. The more you comment on my picture, the more I will reply. You get what you pay for in my book! It will come via PM or e-mail. Have a nice day and happy easter egg hunting! (provided I don't die, get laid off or other clamity) Rob

Now knowing what it is hasn't impacted my score by the way, I am just curious.
I don't think it was your comment. It is one of the first comments I received and was several days ago.

I went and looked at the user profiles of the participants in this thread. To this point there have been 30 participants in this thread, not counting myself. One of those has never commented nor entered a challenge, leaving 29 who have commented and received comments.
Of those 29 participants, 17 have left fewer comments than they have received.
I'm now throwing out for discussion the idea that if we have complaints about the number and quality of comments, the solution is no further than our own keyboards, and I don't mean complaining about it in the forums. I'll make the argument that a net receiver of comments has little right to complain about the number of comments, as by not making as many comments as you get,you are, at least in theory, part of the problem rather than part of the solution. I would further argue that if we as photographers do not comment, we are relying on non-photographers to comment and therefore should accept the quality of comments that we get. Again, if we want to improve the quality of comments, the solution lies in our own hands. We understand the fundamentals of photography and should be willing to share that knowledge for the benefit of our peers.
I bet if all of those 17 participants worked at evening up their ratios, a lot of the complaintsabout comments would go away.
Also, on a more positive note, thank you all of you who have made comments, especially the 12 net contributors and especially kee who has made an astounding 1.578 comments... WOW!
-Terry
hi;
I'm not one of the 17. And it makes me feel good that I have left 100 more comments than I have received.
( maybe this will give me the incentive I need to comment some mor before Sunday midnight. :'-D

I am guilty of receiving more comments than I have given! However, being fairly new with the camera the comments have legitimately improved my picture taking ability and for that I am very thankful!!
Most of my comments have been about how much I like a picture, but I feel that in time as I learn more I too will be able to give constructive critiques.
I have 10 comments this week, most are positive and the ones who have left their score are real good (7 & 8's) but my adverage is 5.2, strange?
