just how extreme the extreme action has to be so voters would not say "does not meet the challenge"? How about a runner on a track? A swimmer? A competitive cyclist? Do you think any of these would work, or it is only Formula-1, motor-cross, snowboards, skateboards, and other stuff from X-games?

Opinions?

I was wondering also. With so few entries so far, I think many people have the same question. I can see the comments now:
"Not extreme enough."
"Does not fit challenge."
"WTF were you thinking?"
"This is a snapshot."

Just kidding of course.

But I really have no clue. Shot some images of popcorn popping on my outdoor fireplace but I figure that doesn't count. They taste really bad too. :)

I've also been wondering what defines extreme. With sports, there are "extreme sports", but a lot of those are called "extreme" more because they are alternative, not because there is more action involved. For example, rock climbing is part of the X-games and it's not exactly fast paced. To me, action implies motion, but it doesn't necissarily imply sports and I have no idea where to place the boundary of extreme.

extreme action could be anything that can't be done by everybody, such as any sport. Not everyone can skate or put a curve on a bowling ball etc. you can even choose not to do sports. How about a convoy of police cars with their lights flashing speeding through the street, I get that alot over here. What about following a Firetruck to a scene and snapping some shots of them putting out a fire? It's gonna take some great shots to win this challenge.

My fingers are a blur on this keyboard, moving so fast that they would definately be classified as extreme action. How about a swift hand to the seat of a misbehaving child ... extreme action or child abuse? or pulling the plug on a sick patient ... kinda slow movement but extreme action. This one will be interesting indeed. I suspect a lot of extreme sport pics.

I know what you're saying, unless I'll get a shot of a suicide in the middle of his fly I would not enter. Again.

Wow! Does the D70 has 1/8000 ss so you can do that? :)

I did mine at 1/800 and it was a good action shot with no bluRrr

I shot mine at 1/16 thanks to quick thinking by the camera I was using. It's not a winning shot by any means, but why would I want to go and change my style by submitting one of those?

Runner on track being chased by a bear....
Swimmer being chased by a shark....
Cyclist crashing spectacularly....

Those work for me.

How about me strangling my co-worker?

Just wishful thinking though I think the right shade of purple can be reached. And if not, photoshop can help.

;)

Need to consider extreme actions that speed was not important. Where someone has gone to the limit such as:

Someone being tickled till they are out of control. Smiling so big it looks like Grand Canyon. Yoga poses.

etc...

Not everyone has the gear to photograph a bullet going through a light bulb.

Shot mine at 1/1000 of a sec and just could not contain it... But i prepare myself for another 4.8 if I'm lucky.

This is a repost from my redundant thread.

I don't live by any race tracks, mountain ski resorts, oceans, cliffs or any place where people do nutty things at high speeds but I noticed that the question hasn't been answered very well yet. So I should hope that nobody leaves comments like "not extreme enough". Speak now or forever......

So anyway what are my options?

Begining with watching paint dry lets move the scale to where ever the minimum would be, to pass for "extreme action" or "What is Extreme Action For Dummies?"

I assume this test shot I took up in Harlem the other day won't cut it?
BTW this guy in the orange is an amazing ball player. He's only 5'7" and can dunk, plus he makes these insane no look passes that are totaly out of this world.

It would be safe to say ANYTHING very, very fast? But how fast?

So you prefer Mountain Dew and Captain Crunch to any early morning hit of crack?

I'll have to try that.

Actually I do not think you are kidding. My brief experience here has demonstrated that some people have more narrow definitions of topics than others. This in itself is not bad, it's the comments they leave basting you for your ideas that matter.

There was a pretty healthy discussion of the 'Extreme Action' in this thread recently...
04/09/2005 08:52:43 AM · #23
Yes the first thing that came to my mind with this challenge was a race track,,my hub and I used to race at a local track and that deffintely would have atleas classified as extreme action,,not to mention adding the lights to add interest,,but we stopped racing for a short period of time so til that happens again I am going to have to get creative,,,,but it sounds like it should be interesting to see what everyone submits,,,

...and to make it easy I'll Quote nsbca7 from that thread:

"It's the action that needs to be extreme, not the sport. This does not exclude X-treme sports, but it certainly does not limit the possibilities to this path either. This could be anything from a pivotal moment in a NASCAR race to a pelican impacting the water on a dive. Use your imagination."

I was thinking
With someone running in the background to a thankfully open bathroom door.. hmmm

Seriously I took some shots yesterday at 1/8000 and there is still a little blur but somehow it kinda takes the action out of it ... Very difficult shot but I am afraid ppl won't get it..

Hmmmm .... I am starting to wonder about my first idea....
