So I'm at the deli in Giant Eagle and I'm debating on 1/2 and 3/4 of a pound of turkey. Usually I get a pound a week for lunch, but I didn't go shopping yesterday and bought subway today...and I'm off Friday. So, I decided that 1/2 was too little and 3/4 was too much so I decided on 3/5.

Me: Can I have point-six pounds of sliced turkey please.
Her: I don't understand what you want.
Me: Sliced turkey, oven-baked, please.
Her: How much do you want?
Me: point-six pounds.
Her: I don't understand that.
Me: You know, one-tenth more than a half.
Her: (looks puzzled)
Me: Three-fifths of a pound.
Her: We just sell it by the weight (looks more puzzled).
Me: Yeah, I want sixty percent of a pound.
Her: I'll tell you what, I'll give you a half.
***she puts a half pound on the scale and looks up***
Me: OK, yeah, now add a tenth to that.
Her: huh
Me: Add a few more slices.

Needless to say, I ended up with .73 but that's fine, I'm happy with that.

I mean come one...I don't care if you're not smart, but if you work in a deli, you should know your units of measure in fractions, percentages, and decimals. I don't know how she got that job, but she should be fired. Sorry if you think I'm harsh, but that was ridiculous.

lol - very funny story. dunno if i would go so far as to say that she should be fired, but maybe they should have her take a training course ;P

You have high expectations of a woman. oh i know i make take heat for that one, but I work with 50 women - 45 of whom would do no better on that question. Of course, a good percentage of men would flunk it too.

I ask sometimes for 2/3 pound..seems if you deviate from 1/2 or full you get them confused.

Well, I learned my lesson...I'm only going to ask for half or full now. Who woulda thought point-six was so hard to get.

Maybe I was being a bit harsh, but that is this lady's job...you would think she would know that stuff.

Quarter-pound increments is how they are "trained" to think in delis. Tenths confuse the hell out of 'em. A half or three quarters, take yer choice. Stop bothering the poor lady :-)

so after your experience would you think of her as a half or 6/10's wit?

You guys just need to go metric. That way you can have 100grams of turkey or 268 grams etc etc.

yeah, it's tough to complain when people don't understand percentages of the "Standard" system! Your whole 'system' avoids decimals like they're the plague!

Join us and be free...(that would be 100% off, rather than 0/64)

Just out of curiosity, why would you ask for .6 lbs rather than 1/2 or 3/4?

Use the metric system! Then you wouldn't have these incidents. :P

I bought a $4 prop @ Petco and handed the cashier a $20. When I realized that she only had singles for change, I said, "Wait, I have four dollars." That was too confusing. She refused and counted out 16 dollar bills for me.

Many years ago, we loaded up the Volvo Wagon with all our empty 2L soda bottles to take them in for recycling. The automatic counter/cruncher outside the grocery store was broken and was directed to go inside for assistance.
A High-Shcool bagger was assigned to help us out, as we had quite a few bottles in the wagon - 311 to be exact.

Enter the evil math: 311 bottles x 0.05¢ should be something that is easily figured out right?
WRONG!

3 attempts with a calculator later, he was still scratching his head, trying to figure out why he was coming up with 1,555 and for the life of him, couldn't understand why the number was so big !!

DOH!

I think it's unfair to stereotype women just because one female neanderthal made it past 40,000 B.C.E. I would have talked to the manager--but then, seeing what the worker was like, I'm not sure about that one....

To be fair, the original poster (deapee) doesn't seem to be singling out women for ridicule; he just happened to be served by one. Now, Prof. fate, on the other hand... Go after him hammer 'n tongs if you wish to stick up for your gender here... jejejeâ„¢
