This weekend there is a music festival downtown (Festival International de Louisiane). Each spring, artists from Europe, Africa, Canada, the Caribbean and the Americas are invited to share their talents with their counterparts in Louisiana. Large stages are set up throughout downtown. Lots of people, cultural exhibits, bands, etc will be on display. I think this would be a great time to shoot a few photos.

My question is if you were to attend something of this nature, what type of len(s) would you like to utilize and why?

Depends on the how close you intend to get and what types of shots you are going for. Which lenses do you currently have?

I have a 50mm f1.8, the kit 18-55 lens and am thinking of buyin another before this weekend. Not sure what to buy, $500 or less, but would like something that would work well in this type of enviroment. You can get very close to stage if you like. All are set up outside., some under tents or on large stages for year round performances. Lots of people walking around

My thoughts are the 50 f/1.8 will do most of your shots if your close, sharp as my razor. If your wanting to purchase a new lens then sense says you should get something longer, best bang for your bucks would be the 70-200 f/4L - it rocks :)

200mm 2.8L II. Sharp, good bokeh, lightning fast focus, good in low light. Great for candids and the crop on a 300D is quite good for stage, event photography. I'll be picking up this lens soon.

I found this available at BHPhoto for only $579.95....that's pretty reasonable for an "L" lens isn't it?

Best bang for your buck -- canon EF 75-300 f4-5.6. It's $200'ish...can't beat that. I'd rather have the extra 100mm (160 with 1.6 crop factor) than the fast 200mm. Seriously...everyone dogs out the 75-300 but I absolutely love mine...and half my shots wouldn't have been as good with the 200mm because I'd lose so much distance.

Anyway...I'd probably bring that lens, but I'd go with the 18-55 mounted and use a smaller aperture to get everything in focus. I don't see much use at all for the 50mm 1.8 in that situation...when the 18-55 will cover what you'd want to 50mm to do and then a ton more.

About the norm...I got mine last weekend at the local shop (now Calumet owned) for 560.00 but then I had to pay CA tax on that... so probably cheaper going Mail order and paying the shipping.

Love the day lights out of it...been through a couple budget (quantaray and Not to impressed with the Tamron 28-300mm XR Di LD) using the 70-200mm is a dream to work with...you know you have a real lens on there when you grab the big rubber ring and spin it. Love the Manual Focus Override...

BTW: I just looked and KEH has an Excellent Plus 70-200mm 4L for 499.00...Excellent Plus (to these guys means it doesn't have the original box) me and a bud at work have but many lens from these guys, better service than the local shops.

4L's don't last long there...

70-200mm 4/L at KEH

Looks like this doesn't have hood or bag.

ED:

Sweet to work with this is out of the box and off to the Wild Animal Park...First time I every used it... 20D AI Servo Mode no burst shots.

This one fills the frame and to see it full size, you realize why you bought the better glass

I have a birthday coming up pretty soon.....I may have to put that on my list....if I can stand it....I may have to go ahead and get it myself....

That 2nd picture is awesome! Very sharp! Is that some kind of Bobcat? $500 is pretty reasonable....everything I've been looking at is almost 1000 or higher....
