I have been watching a few lenses on ebay, looking for that 'good deal' (aka steal) and saw this lens go for more than i think is right, as it looks to be a used version of this one.
Am i missing something, or is the winning bidder one of Mr Barnums 'suckers'?

I sold my 50mm f/1.8 on ebay for $106 plus shipping and I only paid $69 for it. |

I saw the lens hood for the Canon 28-135IS go for £27 +p&p...it only costs £23 brand new.
It's the bidder syndrome, once some start they can't stop and will go to any lengths to win the bid...regardless of the value of the item.

People often get caught up in bidding wars, most of the time Ebay is for sellers.I sold my 75-300 IS USM for £50 more than I payed for it - go figure!

LOL, that's sooo e-bay. But tell me, what is this "sell a lens" concept you speak of? ;-)
I'd sell a lens on e-bay in an instant, but buy one? Yes, but only if it is either...
- An unusual item that not many bidders will be interested in or recognize the value of
- It gets ignored because of poor timing or marketing and I can "snipe" at the end.

Often times buyers from other countries will bid an item up because, although that lens is available to you here for one price that same lens may cost considerably more in another country. I'm not sure it would make up for the discrepency here, but it could be a factor.

It would also appear the bidding may have been tampered with by the seller on this auction. This is speculation. Unscrupulous sellers sometimes use another account to place a high bid in order to find out how far a legit bidder is willing to go and then quickly withdraw that bid. I'm not saying that was actually the case here, but it does look suspicious considering the timing of the retraction and the unusual high price.

eBay is definitely a seller's market. The venue is so popular and has such extraordinary exposure that items will frequently sell for a higher than retail price. I have seen the same phenomena at live auctions; the bidders get caught up in a bidding war and don't know when to stop! Despite this, there are still some great bargains to be found there, but less so than a few years ago. I can often find a better price at Newegg or Amazon than at eBay, and buy from these reputable dealers with higher confidence.

It can be very rewarding to buy and sell on Ebay. BUT you have to know the product, current street prices etc.
I looked long and hard at Ebay when I was looking at buying the D70 with 18-70 kit lens + 512mb card, I found a good deal through a shipping from Melbourne place and that was important to me as I'm an Aussie.
I printed this out and took the print out to the local camera shop who matched the deal, win / win situation :).

I started watching 80-200's about a month ago. Three went off in a 3 hour span...i was doing a wait and see...the first one went for $55, then the other two crept up to about 75-85 range. I missed the steal!

I would definitely agree that you should do a lot of research on exactly what you're buying before bidding on anything on ebay.
Also that you should decide your max bid and stick to it.
I am amazed at how often I see people paying more for second hand items on ebay than they would for a brand new version from a number of reputable online stores.
I'd also advise checking out not only whether the seller's feedback is positive but whether any of that positive feedback is for sales of items similar to the one you're considering.
There are bound to be people who sell lots of cheap tat to build up positive comments in order to then pull a scam on a sale of a more expensive item.

Talking about eBay, a new Canon 600mm f/4L IS lens went for US$4301.00... when a retail version goes for US$7199.95 at B & H.
Now how likely is the winning bidder to get his lens....

Very likely I would think.
I have purchased NEW Nikon lens and other pieces of equipment for about 1/2 the street price here in Australia. Mind you I had my heart in my mouth untill it arrived but it did and I'm very pleased with it.
Mostly ships from Hong Kong and then you have to hope that customs don't check it so you have to pay GST on it. Can also track the goods so you know exactly what stage of delivery they are at in most cases.
I now have a few trusted suppliers when I'm bidding.

The same dude sold an identical one for over $5000 last week and the buyer seems happy....unless it was a shill buyer, your friend is probably getting a great deal.

For us in the states, craigslist is a great alternative for buyers. Ebay is strictly a seller's market unless you're looking for something that's hard to find.

If the winning bidder sends any money to the seller in this case he/she will lose that money. This is a case of a stolen eBay account. The seller has no record of ever selling anything more then a few software items, books and coffeee cups. Then all of a sudden sells 2 600/4L lenses. The first one was purchased by someone with a feedback rating of 1.(canoneosshop (1) If you look at the bidding patterns of the second auction you will notice that the happy winner of the first auction (canoneosshop (1)was the person who bid up the second auction. Classic pattern. Payment is only accepted through Western Union and bank transfers. eBay strongly and repeatedly warns about making payments in this manner. They are completely unrecoverable.
Anyone with a small amount of experience on eBay would have noticed at least one or two of these signs. Most did I'm sure, thus the low final selling price.
I bought my 600/4 on eBay for $6800, but it was from a known and reputable seller. I have done business with that same seller a few times since then without the first problem.
Caveat emptor!

One other thing to note: The seller previously sold almost exclusively on German eBay, and now seems conveniently located in the US Virgin Islands.
Also the person bidding up the third unlikely auction has a rating of (0).

I sent the following mesage to the seller:
What is the serial number of this lens?
And will you accept payment of this lens through an escrow service? If so which one? I would like to bid on your lens.
I'll let you know if I get an answer.

That is exactly what the buyer of the second lens is doing - hopefully he will keep his money!
