Hi DPC crowd,
I've really been busy in the last month... in fact I've even (gasp) started to not enjoy photography, as I've been swamped by masses of photos on my hard drive that need processing! Bearing in mind I'll take 500-2000 photos at one gig depending on how many bands are playing and how photogenic they are, I've really been struggling under my workload!
Anyway, I've resolved to slow down and enjoy things more.
Comments on these photos and my general portfolio will be appreciated, as I'm about to revise my //www.EyesOpen.co.uk website which is getting a bit out of date now.
The models were shot at various TFP (time for prints... models and photographers work for free in exchange for photos) events around where I live, and were really useful learning experiences for me.

Whoa, Bob - now there's some really good stuff amongst your gig work, from a quick look. I'll be back later ...
What with Skip's stuff as well, I'm not going to have time to get any work done!

Hey Bobster, I think from your statement my suggestion is to slow down on shooting. Not taking less gigs, but shooting less at them. I'm not trying to be insensitive, but 2000 shots in one day sounds completely excessive. If there were 100 bands sure, lol. I'd say you're throwing out a lot of those shots so slooooow done and be ready for the really great shots instead of clicking like you're afraid you'll miss them. I have images in my head of smoke coming from your camera!
Have confidence that your photos will be great even if you only take 20 shots instead of 2000. |

2000 photos is what I take at an all-day event with about 10 bands. That's only 200 photos each, which I don't think is excessive at all! ;-)
I used to be a lot more discerning about when I pressed the shutter, but I found that my photography got better when I didn't worry about memory space and just went for it. In a way, it's a lot like sports photography. |

Bobster, your image, as always, are fantastic. I've always been a fan. I actually just signed up on OMP last night and I'm already booking shoots with three models. I hope I get anything as close to as good as your stuff. I dare say you should start limiting your TFP to only selected models and start getting the money you deserve, especially for the event photography. |

Wow, those are sensational!
The band shots are awesome, and thanks for some great ideas as I might be doing a shoot for a band shortly and have never done one before.
Absolutely love the glamour ones! Love the sexy lady in the latex (I assume) and her hands above her head. The one on the pool table is simple awesome, as is the one of the same girl leaning forward. And I especially love the one of the girl on all 4's, that background works really well.
Sheesh, now I am going to start running short of favourites, thanks for nuffin!!!!!

Yep, echoing the sentiment here - an awesome array of images... Just realised I don't have you in my favourites...okay, rectified.
And as terrific as the band shots are, the ones of the 'sue' are enough to blow just about anyone's socks off. |

Cool shots, what lens did you use for the gig shots?

Thanks again for the comments, keep them coming! ;-)
Most of my shots are taken either with a 50mm f1.7 lens, or with a 75-300mm kit lens. Hopefully I'll be expanding my lens collection really soon, as I'm fed up with the lack of flexibility these lenses give me. I also have a kit 35-75mm Minolta lens, but it is truly awful so I try not to use it. |

Dammit, no wonder it takes you so long to process. How do you get so many so good? The gig shots especially - you *really* ought to be doing this for a living you know!
Favourites? Too many, but these 2 stick in my mind ...

Ah, just spotted this response to my earlier thread, and thought I would sneakily bump it with a response(!)
Cheers Bod, I'm trying damn hard to make gig photography my new career, but I seem to keep hitting loads of brick walls. I WILL persevere though! |

Thanks, many of my concert shots use flash... all of the recent photos were taken at low-key gigs in the small town where I live, so the lighting just isn't good enough to not use flash.
I started my gig photography at all the big festivals and venues, so it took me a while to convince myself it was okay to use flash at smaller venues! I hold the flash in one hand and the camera in the other, and make sure I always bounce the flash off a suitable wall or ceiling... I never point the flash straight at the musicians, and I always make sure I catch plenty of ambient light as well, pure flash looks awful.
Edit, special thanks for your comment... your Aura photo is one of my favourite photos on DPC, it really knocked me out!
