Hi
I was just wondering if anyone out there can help. I am new to digital SLR's and I have just bought a Canon 350d. I am looking to take photos of motor sports in particular Formula One and was wondering which Canon lens would be suitable? Obviously I would like to get in quite close to the actual cars at speed, etc. I am on a fairly limited budget too!! Would like to stick to Canon lenses if pos. Would be grateful of some advice! Thanks, Michael |

the canon 70-200L F4 is a good place to start, it's very sharp, fast focusing, and under $600 new! |

Tell us your budget, & well tell you how to blow it! I would also suggest the 70-200 F4 L as a good Bang for the Buck. |

200mmm is not going to be enough reach to get in close, especially if you're going to be shooting from the wrong side of the fence. You're looking at 300+, even up to 500-600 if you want to get in really tight.
Again, give us an idea of the budget you're looking at, but this won't be cheap!

I second the vote for 70-200 f4 L
Fantastic lens and light enough that you will actually want to carry it around. Get a good monopod and you are away!
You can also pick up the Tele converter 1.4 which will give you a little more reach.
PS/ I recently saw a photo of a 350D strapped to a 70-200 F2.8 IS and it looked pretty funny. (small DSLR, HUGE lens!)

For around $450 you can get the
Canon 75-300mm f4/5.6 IS USM. I have it and adore it. Wonderful lens for the $$$ and the reach is terrific. I'm not pro and I don't have a way to justify L glass since this is a hobby, so it's a good choice for me. Something to look into anyway. :o)

Damn this place has gone L mad today. I can't believe that you're all advising a beginner who has stated that they are on a limited budget to go out and buy the most expensive glass there is.
And the wrong focal length at that.
Laurie's advice is good. The non-IS version is a lot cheaper and Sigma do a cheap 70-300 too. One of these will at least give you decent reach and give you a good idea of what lens to spend the big money on.
Take a look at my motorsports shots from last year here.
The first 2 gallerys were shot with the Sigma 70-300. The rest were shot with the Sigma 100-300 f4 EX, often with a 2x extender (this is where the L snobs start sneering - ignore them unless they show you where to buy the 600L for less than a car). The only shots taken at 200mm or under are the panning shots. The rest are shot at typically 400-500mm.
