I'm planning to but an SLR-like digital camera. Does anyone has a suggestion on what brand and model to buy? |

An SLR-like digital camera, or an SLR digital camera?

Maybe he means one that looks like a Steam Locomotive Railway engine - perhaps shaped like Thomas the Tank Engine. Or perhaps one that looks like a Self-loading Rifle. ;-)

Hands down, get a Canon. If you have a limited budget get the 20D. Get the 1Dmark II if you can afford it. |

Sheesh, that's SO not always true. A camera like mine, or any of the many similar models available, is simply ideal for may photographers. You REALLY need to know where someone's at before you can advise them.
I presume that he's referring to "prosumer" cameras that "look" like small SLRs, like my Nikon or the Panasonic mentioned in this thread.
Robt.

hehehehe, I have to laugh when a 'limited budget' means a 20D. My camera was roughly half the price of a 20D and most people seem to think I spent a lot on it.
I guess 1D mark 11 ownership has the power to skew ones perspective a little (he says jealously) :).
I think I have to echo roberts sentiment here ....'sheesh!'

It never ceases to amaze me how people need to push their choice as the "best" choice for all. Give it a rest. the reason they make so many different cameras is becasue there are so many different needs out there.

What's your budget? What kind of photography do you enjoy or planning on taking? Indoor, outdoor, portraits, sports, etc.

I didn't really see where he said best choice. And he has as much right to suggest an awesome fast DSLR as anyone else does to sugest a budget look-a-like.
It is a damn nice camera.
The only body I would like to have now besides the 1D Mk II is the 1Ds Mk II and because of the speed of the 1D Mk II there is no way I would give up the 1D Mk II to get it. I'd just have to have both. I would and still may sell my 1Ds to that end, but not my 1D Mk II.
I don't have a mortgage, car payments or worse, a wife. This is how I choose to spend my money.

By the way, this is not an attempt at elitism. If I did have 5 kids, a wife, mortgage and payments on two cars I would definatly not have the gear I have now. I would be happy with a good P&S if that was all I could afford.

DITTO! And if I didnt have a family, pets, house, school, ect then I would have the gear:)
*Cmon its a simple question by someone that came to the right place to find out about cameras, be nice a little :) But go ahead dont mind me have a little fun! Pick at me if you like too:)*
I like my Fugi S3100 $299 and cheaper in some places.. wished I could of got the S3500 or S3700 the upgraded models.
I would love to have the Canon rebel or one of the canons with the highest pixels. or Megabyte images... You can make wallpaper with those cameras! I like to go with the canon too because I have a 35 mm EOS and a good lense to start me with..
You can use the shop cameras here under the heading LEARN

I suggest you check out all the cameras you can when you get ready and don't just look online. Go out a play with these things at the store. Think of the future when you buy. My first Digital was a Kodak 2 Megapixel and it took compact flash cards. I have chosen to stay with ones that take compact flash cards because I would have to buy new memory if not. I just bought the Canon Powershot S1 IS and am real happy with it. Love the zoom capabilities and can buy a few add on lenses. For now that is good enough for me. But to recommend a camera it would be real helpful to know what your needs are.

I realy enjoyed my Minolta Dimage7 It had about everything I could ever want in a camera. Good megapixels, great macro, very versitile with a 7X xoom to boot. You can find them for around 300-400 USD is the best part. My only complaint would be that it had a fixed lens. so the best you could get for zoom (that I have found) with attachments would be 28X. Probably not the best camera but I was very happy with it.

Listen to yourself. The guy came on here, asking what kind of camera he should get. The person you're attacking gave his response, his honest opinion, and you tell him to give it a rest? He has the right to share his opinion, and the guy asked for it.
Get the 300d ;-)

I got the 20D and if I could afford the 1D Mk II then I still wouldn´t consider it, I´d get the Hasselblad H1 medium format camera ;) |

No, you wouldn't.
I have a mortgage payment, a wife, 2 kids and 4 cars to support, and I was not satisfied with a prosumer once i compared it's capabilities and images with dSLR's.
Of course a friend of mine bought a Fuji S7000 last night and will be selling his Rebel...so to each their own.

I'm reading 'DSLR-like' and I'm thinking Sony F 828. It's an amazingly versatile and capable camera, IMO, has fast Zeiss glass, feels hefty in hand, and except for a little noise at increased ISO settings, should be a joy to use and grow with for anyone serious about photography but without the budget and tolerance for the inconveniences of real DSLRs and the great expense of acquiring a suitable lens and accessory system.
The Leica Digilux 2 is, or so I feel, probably the best choice (as a DSLR-like cam) for a truly discriminating shooter. But it ain't cheap.
If it has to be a real DSLR, I'd consider either Canon or Nikon for the arsenal of quality lenses available with these brands. Again budget is the one major consideration. The new Canon EOS 350 XT would be my choice for an entry-level DSLR. The 1D Mark II (Canon), in my mind, would be a kind of ultimate choice, if I could afford it. Both the 20D (Canon) and the D70 (Nikon) are wonderful tools as well, all dependent on needs and cash flow.

The Panasonic DMC-LC1 is, apart from the body itself, the same camera, for a lower price. But still, both are priced in such a way that you can get a Rebel or D70 with good basic lenses (DX 18-70, EF-S 17-85) for almost the same price. On the other hand, they (leica) are a lot of fun to use with all those manual knobs and dials. Manufacturers should put more fixed lenses like that on cameras.

Well maybe not bubbly, but a good P&S is much much better then no camera at all.
And perhaps if you are an impulsive person it would be better if you did not test drive the 1D Mk II any time soon or you might tend to compare its capabilities and images with your 300D and be working on a second mortgage.

haha. I will not be trying a 1d mark II if given the chance -- nor will I be testing any lenses or anything else...because I am an impulse buyer.

I am really surprised know one has suggested the Minolta Dimage A2. This camera has a ton of great features including a relatively fast imaged stabilized 7x zoom lens that starts at a nice 28mm (35mm equiv.) and the highest resolution electronic viewfinder available. I believe it is the best 8mp fixed lens prosumer camera available. You can see details of it here. The newer A200 is another good option but it is not a replacement for the A2 as there are some significant differences between the two cameras. A lower resolution screen being one of them. The site I referred you to is great for checking out all of the latest cameras. Happy shopping.

For some reason the link I just provided takes you to the Home page rather than the specific camera section I had chosen. You will need to navigate to the appropriate section under Reviews.
