Anyone have experience shooting in wide angle?
I have been considering buying the wide angle lens or my olympus e-20, and today I rec'd a check I was not in any way expecting, that would allow me to shop for myself! The question is, I don't want to jump into it without fully understanding all the applications. I mostly do people photos, but since belonging to dpc, I have been able to explore all kinds of subject matter. So, if you wouldn't mind sharing some insight, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks!

Karen,
I have the wide-angle adapter for my nikon 995, and I enjoy it quite a bit. It definitely opens up new creative paths. The distortion of perspective in wide angle images can be a powerful tool. One downside with some of the "adapters" is that they may add to chromatic abberations and lens flare. Also, I have experienced some degree of vignetting with mine; I don't find this too objectionable since I can correct and/or crop easily.
I found it valuable to take my camera into a reputable camera shop and try out the adapter prior to purchase. This really helped eliminate some of the anxiety.

I think you will have fun with your wide angle. I use it for goofy portraits and landscape shots. I think it would be a great investment

I wasn't sure how much I'd use one so I bought a used one on ebay. It actually has way too much distortion for my taste, but it may be because it's .5x rather than something less "powerful". After having it, I've decided that I definitely would use one. I keep running into situations where I wish I had a good one now.

I've got a wide angle adapter (HGD0758)for my Sony and there is no vignetting with it. Great for landscape shots and large groups of people - you can get so much more into the picture. Also you can use it creatively to make objects at the foreground appear huge in comparison with the background (e.g. boats against landscapy views, huge hands vs small head, that's sort of thing).

I've noticed a slight loss of sharpness in landscapes, but nothing USM won't correct easily.

Sometimes in the shots with architectural elements the barrel distortion is quite pronounced. I use free PanoTools Photoshop plug-in to correct it - there is a tutorial on DPReview about it. There is Andromeda's LensDoctor plug-in commercially available.

buy one. i think a wide angle lens is an essential part of a photographer's tool kit. I'd say camera, tripod, polarizing lens, and wide angle lens are the basics I wouldn't want to go without. Of course, I'd like everything there is, but we're all on budgets... I personally have a lot more background with video; I use a canon xl1, and I would never be able to get the shots I want without a wide angle lens. Buy one.

Wow! Thanks everyone for your input/suggestions and support. You have taken the 'fear of wasting $$' out of my decision! I will buy one!! Yippee!
I will get it on-line I think though. I saw it for $40. less than at my local camera store.
:0)

Justine.. I'll be sure to let you know!! :P

I liked your quote about wida angle adapter. I was also thinking about a wide lense. I originally thought of buying a cheaper version but I have been told by another person to go factory and you are convincing me.
Is it possible to post a link of a wide angle photo or 2 to seal the deal.
Also, where did you buy your (HGD0758) or know of a cheaper place other than Sony direct.

I just bought the HDG0758 wide angle lens from ecost.com. for $200. This lens is huge! I have not had a chance to use it yet, but I will soon.
