I usually understand the votes that I get, but this time I'm not really sure why I got a 4.9 on this one for light on white. I have three comments and they gave me good feedback. What did I do wrong?

Your score has got me beat too i gave it an 8, I think it's a lovely image of a beautifully styled and engineered product.

I think its a nice shot as well. The only thing I think I would like even better is if the upper left backgroud was more white... Never the less, I would have given it a good score.

The background is more cream colored than white and is not uniform. It suffers digitalization along some of the metalic curves. It has a significant amount of "dark" in the frame for a "light on white" challenge. This would make a decent catalog picture but for a photography competition it lacks strong eye catching appeal. I did not vote in this challenge but would have scored it a 6 for its stock photography appeal.

As always, just my opinion...
I think you might have suffered some lower votes from people who are assessing the "lightness" quotient on many levels other than color. You have a large, bulky, or heavy piece of kitchen equipment...part of it is white, but part of it is much darker. Your white background shifts to blue with the light coming in from the right. The light on the mixer itself is a bit harsh, creating shadows, and the front surface of the mixer (the part facing us) is darker than the top, which is probably more along the lines of the kind of "light" and "white" most voters were after. I didn't vote on yours, but if I had voted I would have given it a 5. It meets the challenge, but lacks the airy, wispy "light on white" that seemed to meet the challenge more inherently. I hope that makes sense. I'm notorious for rambling! :o)

I gave it a 6. It's a technically adequate photo, but it lacks the "wow" factor necessary for a higher score in a DPC challenge. For an object like a kitchen appliance, the wow factor may be achieved by an unusual angle, interesting crop, interesting lighting, or surreal setting or use. A mixer sitting on a counter is going to strike most people as fairly ordinary.

Thanks to all for helping me understand the photo from your point of view. I will use this info to help better my other submissions. Thanks again.

I gave it a below average vote. It meets the challenge as far as subject matter. But, IMHO, it definitely has blown highlights big time. And the subject is kinda ordinary, no wow factor. At least it has a good amount of contrast in it. I'll say this - it appealed to me more than many, many that finished ahead of it.

A bowl full of fluffy whipped cream would have helped offset the heaviness of the mixer and have put the thing to work in the observer's eye.

An ordinary subject from an ordinary angle with blown highlights at the top. Better lighting and some unusual twist (like a duck in the mixer) would make a world of difference.

I gave it a 5, the draw back was the blown highlights. If the lighting would have kept a uniform color to the mixer I feel it would have scored higher.
