Let's just get this over with. I know that there are people on this site that love photos of babies, pets and flowers, and there are those people that hate these photos. It seems that it is time to let those people that do love these things have a challenge to themselves. (Yes, I know we had a 'Pets and Their People' challenge not too long ago, but this is different.)
The week after the 'Babies, Pets and Flowers' challenge, we should have the opposite with 'Photograph Something Interesting' Challenge :)

I wouldn't put flowers in anything like the same category as babies and pets. Flowers are endlessly interesting. The closer you get to them, the more you see/find. They are replete with colors, patterns, and all manner of fascinating material. I photograph flowers all spring/summer long, never get tired of 'em.
Now, babies and pets are a different kettle of fish (so to speak); every shooter has an emotional attachment to his/her particular baby/pet, and when you have emotional attachment artistic DEtatchment goes out the window, and things get smarmy real fast....
Robt.

The closest thing I've seen to a challenge like this was the 'Cliches' challenge.

Maybe we could have a ‘Photograph Something Uninteresting’ Challenge instead? |

Thought that was the object of the Mundane Challenge. |

I would love to see people who do not regularly photograph babies or pets to do just that -- photograph them. The good thing about flowers is that they are relatively still once you "pose" them. Infants are either sleeping, eating, or pooping. Pets have a mind entirely of their own. Emotional attachment? It is a factor, I admit, but a well done pet/baby/flower picture can evoke emotion in someone unattached to it.
I understand some peoples' ire with them though. We all have our "category." For me, I get tired of seeing bottles of alcohol and figurines, but that is just me. :-)

This brings up my idea of a Challenge that I haven’t brought up because I just knew it wouldn’t fly. How about the ‘Worst Photograph’ challenge. We vote the highest score on the absolutely most horrible picture. Sort of flip the tables on everyone? And we might all learn something about what we shouldn’t be doing as well. Well at least some of us I can only speak for myself of course. |

If your windmill's ever idle, just get me to drop by and take off the lens cap -- you'll have a brisk breeze in seconds ... |

As a professional childrens photographer, it is possoble to get an intersting pic of babies and endlessly hard. It is rare to get to a shoot and have it be a breeze. so while all you don't really like the idea of it, I would be nice for you to respect those of us that do it and admit that maybe you don't like thise kinds of challenges because most people are very bad at it. Just a thought. (though seeing a challenge of babies and pets would be a little disappointing since i joined the site to do something different)

I would counter that most people might not be "good at" taking photographs falling into a myriad of varying categories.
It could also be argued that the dislike expressed by some site members vis-a-vis this type of photos may stem from the fact that they tire from what they perceive as a not so veiled attempt by some to garner additional points via the use of "cutesy" photos replete with kids, kittens and the like.
I may be wrong, but it is food for thought....

Or like myself just don't find babies/newborns an interesting artistic subject for a photographic challenge site.
To me baby (not toddler) shots are something kept between the photographer (what a wonderful shot I took) and the family (what a wonderful addition to our family).
I would critique (fairly) a baby shot here as the photographer is asking how well they did, what they could do better, do you think the parents will like it...
I do not like to "Rate" baby shots against other shots in a challenge for bragging rights. Emotional ties do not fall into play in challenges for me and I will vote accordingly.

As opposed as attempts to garner points by the use of any other technique?
I think what it really stems from is people don't want to be put in the position of criticizing someone's photo, when they know it can be perceived as a criticism of someone's child/pet -- that it is hard and makes people uncomfortable.
Try to imagine that the child is not the photographer's child -- that they have no emotional attachment, and have merely attempted to record a scene in which a child or animal happens to be the protagonist, and then evaluate it on the usual grounds of composition, exposure, and topicality. Don't add an emotional component which may not be there, and I think voting on these types of pictures will be easier.

I could have mentioned the occasional use of gratuitous nudity but I opted not to... That approach is also one which I find intriguing.
I have no problem with nudity, but I do question its use on occasion, particulary when viewed in relation to the challenge. There do exist occasions when I am truly baffled as to the reasons why nudity was introduced at all in the photo as it adds nothing to the value of the capture.
Just an opinion....

Didn't we just do a pets challenge like 2 months back?
I can see this challenge as have the lowest amount of voting ever.

The voters definitely have their likes and dislikes! It's amusing to watch the scores when you submit a controversial subject. A 10 or high score followed by a 1 or low score is pretty much the norm. Very much the roller coaster ride.
