Is there any chance of the Kodak 7590 that replaced the 6490? It really is a huge improvement to it, and it may have a slight price decrease soon. Kodak anounced an even newer version. I just think it is a fabulous camera and from what I have seen on the Kodak forums, a good enough step up from the 6490 to make it worth it.

| If she wants to wait, and I suppose she won't, Kodak has a new one coming out in May, the Z7590. 5 megapixels, 10x optical and sync flash. I own the DX6490 and love it. |

Wow... we got the camera last night... The instructions flippin SUCKED. How do I go about working the PASM mode? I can't adjust the shutter speed or ap value... how do I get to that? I turned the dial to PASM and couldn't figure out what do do after that to adjust shutter speed and ap value... a little help or walk through would be awsome since the flippin instructions SUCK!

Check the ports of the others who have this camera as well. I never had much issue with not having IS on that camera. It performs exceptionally well, even zoomed in all the way. I'd still be using it if I hadn't gotten the Rebel as a surprise gift from Santa. It's a wonderful, portable, easy-to-use camera that will not disappoint. I promise. You can quote me on that. ;o) |

If you bought the Kodak DX-6490, there are great tutorials on the Kodak website that help guide you through the settings and functions.
Personally, I used the auto mode for a couple of days or so and then progressed to PASM. When in PASM, you use the menu screen to make choices for your ISO and white balance and such, and depending on whether or not you are in P, A, S, or M, you use the little dial on the front of the cam below the shutter to adjust speed or aperture settings (if I remember right... I haven't used mine since getting the Rebel).
Just remember that you can't really screw it up by pushing buttons. Fiddle with every setting, change stuff again and again until you get comfortable with it. It's really user-friendly, and the manual was really helpful and straightforward. You might have to read it over and over again but it's worth the time you put in to studying it.

When in PASM mode (I'm relying on my memory because I'm at work w/o the camera), go to little dial in front, probably by your/her right index finger. Press it in. It should show the icons in the view finder. Look at the left. Does it say P, A, S or M? Press in the dial. When the arrows are on each side of one of the initials (P,A, S OR M), rotate the dial to the left or right until you get to the mode you want to use. For example: when M is on the screen, freeze it there by pushing the dial in again and the arrow is now on top of the M. Next, rotate the dial and it will move to the right so you can select the f-stop desired, shutter speed, ISO setting. You lock each in by making sure you press in the dial and the arrow is on top. If you leave the arrows on either side of, for instance - the f-stop - you will just keep changing it. Let me know if this is beginning to help! I'll continue then.

AHHHH, I wasn't aware that you could push in the dial, Lauri and WooHoo, thank you very much, now I just got 20 mins till school is over to go play wit it some more :)
I am at school, just in the Library :) We have a basketball game today (state game) so all the teachers go lax on us and let us do what we want so I decided that I would go to the library and read up on my real passion.
thanx again you two!

I wasn't aware that that jog button was pushable... Nowhere in the instructions does it say that :) Now that I have figured it out however I have some fantastic pics from it! what a camera for the price! ($200 bucks at walmart!)
