What do you think of these camera motion based abstracts?
The second one has a curves adjustment. I wasn't sure which approach to follow for the final. I kind of like both, but want to end up with only one. What do you think (you're welcome to tell me honestly that neither is worth pursuing...)?

I prefer the first one... the lighter colors are beautiful and seem to fit the "flow" of the motion. Very pretty! :o)

Hi Neil. I personally like the first one and don't care so much for the second one. I guess it depends on what you are trying to convey. The first image is soft in color, texture, and motion...the other is more 'dark'. I also prefer the first one because there are more details present that are lost in the black areas of the second.

Good luck. I just love your abstract series and I've been playing with it a little bit lately since seeing yours. I haven't been as successful as you though. :-)

Neil, my honest first reaction to the thumbnails was "nice, but no interest" . . . . Ha!! THEN I opened them up . . . the first one DOES have a focus of interest - all the movement and details. It really works. Just a little different, and it wouldn't. I like the second one, but it doesn't come alive in the details as much. You ae really developing your eye for this sort of image. Great work once again.

I like the fire and contrast in the second one but the tonal range is greater in the second one.

To me, it depends. When looking at thumbnails, the first one definitively looked better. However, opening full-size detailed images, the second one left more of an impression on me.

SO, I guess, my answer is - it depends on what your target size is. Since it most likely isn't a thumbnail, but 5"x7" or 8"x10" or higher, I'd go with the second one.

I 100% agree with Serge, exactly what i thought when I viewed them both at full size. I thought I was going to like the first one better, but in fact liked the second one. Nice job!

i would like something between the two, but a little closer to the first. maybe if you pumped up the saturization just a bit...or flatten the layers, duplicate, set blend to multiply, then backed off the opacity.

I like the first one better ,I don't know why ,it's just very relaxing to look at. Nice

Actually I really like both a lot... differently but equally.

I'm with KAVEY. I like the first one because of the color, but I like the second one because it is a bit darker and has a different mood to it. If the first one was a bit darker too I think I may like it even more.

I'm gonna be fickle on this one and say that I like them both...1 for the colors and 2 for its dark moodier side. But if I had to choose and I would go with one.

Hey Neil I like your motion abstracts and you've done a few lately...you got a great eye for what to pull out of the shot...do me a favor and try this out (if you are using windows) just once:

Set your screen saver to Mystify or Beziers and kick it off using the preview button, put the cam on a tripod and go with a shutter of 1.5 to 2.5 seconds, turn the lights out in the room and shoot those goofy things dancing around the screen. Take a look at those shots and see if there isn't any good abstracts in there you could pull out. It was a lot of fun playing around with it for the light challenge.

That's how if did this one:



Fullsize and printed this thing came out pretty wicked as the scanlines (wood grainy looking stuff) was a result of resizing and went away in the print.

Thanks Andy. I'm always looking to try new things, so I'll give it a try.

I have tried moving the camera looking at two dimensional pictures (which I didn't have any success with) and was thinking of doing that with something on screen, taking advantage of the lighting, but I haven't done it yet. This is a good idea as well.

I felt the same, only reversed ... thought I would like the second, then liked the first better after opening them.
