The article says not to kill him, because he eats the bugs that eat your pretty plants. |

Cool, it's the lynx spider. No wonder he never left the flower. He was waiting for bugs.
Now if we could just figure out the thing that focus found. |

Since you seem to have some mycological background, can you tell me what this lovely orange fungus might be?
Also, I'm thinking of geting a 2800Z -- any feedback or suggestions?

Not too keen on this one. It is lovely photo though. But, If I were forced to guess, I'd say its some variety of wood ear fungus. Was it growing on the forest floor or on an old log? |

Shortredneck, that is one of the most beautiful spiders I've ever seen! Coming from Australia, I've seen a lot of them :). One day I'm going to try and get a really good photo of one of the huge golden orbs we have, or maybe a wolf spider or a huntsman. I'll steer clear of red backs, although they're beautiful... the fact that they can kill you makes me wary :). Oh, and white tails... bleh. They can cause arachnoid necrosis or whatever that thing's called where your skin just dies and ulcerates all around the bite.
If we had more spiders like that beautiful green lynx I'd be very happy :) |

Yes, we could call it the something unusual challenge. Only problem I could see is the comments would probably go like this- "That's not unusual, I have a hundred of those in my backyard and I know someone who has one for a pet". |

This is a harmless fungi found in most woodlands in the states but not so much in Europe. Dont eat it though, it will make you sick.
The 2800z is a superb camera. The image quality is the best I've seen on a camera in this price range. BUY IT NOW!

Thanks for the info! The camera's on my list now. That fungus was growing in the gravel/dirt driveway at my uncle's house near Leaburg, Oregon. It's about 50 yards from the bank of the McKenzie River, about 25 miles east of Eugene. My 4-1/2 year old son Isaac actually took that picture last Fall, although I did minor cropping and tone adjustment.
I was fortuate enough to be exposed to mycology while still in high school; there's maybe two varieties I'd trust myself to eat, and anyway I'd rather look at them than harvest them now...
