Does anyone know what the dickens this thing is. It is the 2nd time I've seen one. We got a dog within the last several months (pictured on my website) and I'm wondering if it is related to her "droppings."
It feels sticky and spongy and the flies "love" it.
The Thing!
Update: Mcmurma's answer below was correct it is a "Stinkhorn." I have updated the webpage accordingly. Thanks for quick reply Michael (mcmurma).

That is the most digusting thing I have ever saw! Man, I can't believe you touched it. Ewwwww.....yuck. It grosses me out just looking at it. Sorry I don't know what it is. It looks like it used to be alive and with tenticles.

Hi Sonja,
I'm still laughing. No, I am not so daring as to touch it without some caution. I picked up the first one with a paper napkin and threw it out. This one is maturing at an alarming rate. Maybe its from outer space!
I'm sure it is just some kind of mushroom or such.

Looks like an alien to me. Or a squid that's out of water. One thing's for sure: It's NOT dog poo. |

It's a fungi, give it time and those tenticles will open. Dont touch it and don't let the dog eat it, it will make your skin burn and give the dog a very bad tummy. |

not sure of the exact make and model, but it is without a doubt a class of fungi commonly referred to as a stinkhorn...for reasons i'm sure you have noticed. |

Since you seem to have some mycological background, can you tell me what this lovely orange fungus might be?
Also, I'm thinking of geting a 2800Z -- any feedback or suggestions?

Oh gross!! The internet says that a stinkhorn is edible!! I wouldn't eat that thing! Also, the stinkhorn is listed on a UK web site. I was under the impression that the fungi in question is in CA?? Whatever it is though, I STILL wouldn't touch it. lol |

Since we are on the subject of gardens, does anybody know what sort of creature this is? I know it has to be some sort of spider but I've neve seen one like this before. eeeww |

That is one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen! LOL It's even putting me off my beloved 'shrooms just thinking about it being funghi!
Eeuugh!
Don't know what possessed me to look at the spider pic... also eeeuuw, but photographically the green body really works incredibly well with the green background at the left.

Thanks. I just went outside to get the mail and that thing is still sitting on the same flower. It's been there about 3 hours now. |

Cruise over to the website of the nearest major university. Their Biology department will probably provide a trail of links leading to someplace/someone you can email it to for ID. You can also try the county agricultural cooperative extension program or maybe even a "pest-control" company... |

Could it be a Caddis Worm? They carry their home (tube) with them until they become flies.

Actually, one of the above posters was correct. It is a Stinkhorn. Its resemblance to a certain male body part is rather (blush) embarrassing.
I found quite a number of websites. For a real quick review of Stinkhorns, go to www.google.com and then click the "Images" tab. Then type in "stinkhorn" and you will see 5 webpages of nothing but pictures from various websites of this facinating (and stinky!!) fungus. |

Or maybe if it gets in my house, I'll just step on it. No, really that's a good idea. I'll do just that. : )

My thoughts exactly. I will only add that the orange fungus (2) is damn cool looking and that I would plant it in a garden for color if I knew more about it. And also that the spider shot (3) is a very nice photo. Lots of balance greated by the colors for me. The spider itself is sick and scry looking, but that's how they tend to be. LOL

Normally spiders are kind off freaky to me, but for some reason this one I like. Beautiful. I love the spikes and the color. Wow cool looking spider. Sonja

QUICK! Erase this post! This is just the sort of challenge my husband likes best. Now if this were a contest for eat the most disgusting thing, he'd win hands down. I'm thinking of entering him as a contestant for that show Fear Factor.
The problem: I don't want him cooking any nasty ole stink bugs in my kitchen equipment!!!

Thanks ya'll. I usually cringe when I see them myself but it was so weird looking and I thought it was just another bug till I counted the legs. I have looked all over the internet and still haven't figured out what kind it is. |
