Dear all

I didn't score as well as I wanted with my Self Portrait entry

I made a deliberate decision to blow outthe tiles above my head as i though they distracted from the image. I liked the high key effect which looked like the harsh glare from a sterile bathroom and submitted a shot I was extremely pleased with.

My question is, would this version of the pic have scored better since it isn't so blown out or was it more than the post processing that caused it to have 50 votes below 5?

Thanks

Steve

I definitely like the first one better. I gave it a 7. I love the blown out tiles. It's what makes the composition so powerful.

I like the texture of the tiles, but there is a corner that shows in the mirror when the tiles are visible, and I find the corner distracting.

Would have moved it from a 5 to a 7 in my case, for what that's worth. The blown areas seemed just "sloppy" to me. I liek it a lot better witht he detail.

"Sloppy"

Can I assume then that you assumed that the blown out highlights were unintensional and just a result of bad exposure?

I think you submitted the correct shot.
The blown out image is a far better shot in my opinion.
It draws the eye to the subject MUCH more than it does in the original.
Well done on an excelent photograph. Well done for making the voter think. In my opinion that is what photography is all about. It is not always about chocolate box pictures that seem to do so very well on this site. Keep up the good work.

I think the one you entered is the best. I like the blown out look. great shot!

Yes, it looked unintentional to me. I seem to be in a minority here however. It may well be the "best" solution would have been to fade the tiles to almost-white, just a hint of texture. I donno... But the image as posted looked to me like you didn'rt care enough to remedy a technical flaw; I didn't see any intent to the blown-out areas, and even if I had I wouldn't have liked them any more. But I'm just one vote, and in this thread I'm clearly outvoted, so take me with a grain of salt.

I like the fist one, except I think it was slightyly over done. But that's just my opinion.

Here's a real rough shot at something in between:

Incidentally, the argument could be made that the version you submitted has removed a "major element", where you have totally "disappeared" much of the grey tiles in the mirror... Personally I think it ought to be ok, but based on other, recent threads you're treading a fine line there.

Cheers for the attempt

but

I still like my submission best and I suppose it's just down to personal taste in the end

I like the blown out tiles but not the blown highlights on your face. Even that wasn't a huge concern though.

Blown highlights are always a risk with the voters who take points away for each technical 'fault' though.
