I'm excited! I just received a call that I won the Black and White award for a local photo contest. Thanks to all who helped me choose which one to enter. It was for a local event, the Icefest. I won $100 (and bragging rights!)

The winning photo: (edit to say the winning shot did not include the border. It was mounted and matted and I will take a shot of it when it goes on display uptown.)

One more edit: Here's the original. Just no good way to take this shot with a decent background.

Congratulations! Nice job on the lighting in your photo, it's probably not so easy with a piece of ice.

Good deal!!! Guess the judges weren't as lame as the ones last year!

How did you manage to isolate the sculp like that? Most of the other ones had busy backgrounds.

Actually have that amount earmarked to join a local camera club. They have a two complete studios available to be used, with lights, backdrops etc., plus a digital dark room station with PScs and a photo quality printer, also a matting station - and oh yeah, a film darkroom (remember those?) Meetings once a week with model shoots some weeks, critiquing some weeks, even some equipment swap events. I think it's a good deal for the money. My biggest problem so far, if you want to call it that, is that it's just about ALL male - who of course prefer to shoot sexy female models. I may have to shake things up a bit :)

I'd like to invest in some studio lighting but want to have some hands on experience first. This seems like a good way to do it.

In photoshop. There is probably an easier way to do it, but I used the paintbrush tool, worked on the photo extremely enlarged, and just colored in the background - trying to pay very close attention to detail.

Boy, that was some work. How long did it take? Mute point - you won - it was sure worth it.

It really didn't take too long...about 20 minutes. This particular sculpture lended itself to doing that better than a few of the others due to the lines and curves. Not a great deal of smaller detail work to do. The hardest part was making sure I got the openings between the legs, etc. correctly filled in. Yep...it was worth it! More for the thrill of winning than the $100, but I'll take it!

Congratulations! Wonderful news! Enjoy those bragging rights. You deserve them! I think the photo club sounds wonderful, too! What a great way to learn without the expense of equipment. Are they accepting anymore members?

Congrats :)

Very impressive. I love how you have turned the original, which was very spoiled by the cluttered background, into that piece of art. Still the same photo, of what matters, but your excellent PS work has really done wonders :)

Marjo...yep! By all means feel free to go with me to the next meeting. I can't go every week because of another Thurs. night committment, but I will be going first Thurs. in March. It's the Camera Club of Cincinnati.

Thanks everyone. Now I'm waiting because they haven't announced the youth category yet and my 10 yr. old entered two shots.
