First of all, I have to say that I am just tickled to death that Outcast won a ribbon, much less the blue one. I was pretty apprehensive about submitting it in the first place, because it's not your typical DPC eye candy shot. Then again, Pain was not your typical challenge, either. I had this idea mulling around in my head, and on the last day for submissions, the weather was decent and all of the "actors" I thought I'd use (my oldest son and his buddies) were actually all available. I had originally thought about going to the basketball court at the park up the street, but decided against it because of a situation that had happened to my own child while walking to the house from the bus stop up the street. He was harrassed by some older kids, who were picking on him for whatever reasons, and my husband happened to be outside and sent the other kids on their way (thank goodness).
Anyway, long story short, it made me decide to do the shoot on our street in front of the house. There were a few comments about the background being distracting with the cars, but I chose the street scenery for a reason. I wanted to depict where kids are bullied, harrassed, and humiliated in the real world. It happens on our streets, and to have made a "clean" background would have detracted from the shot immensely in my honest opinion.
The boys were SO very cooperative, and that helped immensely. The child who is in the foreground is one of my sons's friends, who, in the past, has been a bullier, so I specifically chose him so that he might more easily comprehend the weight of his past actions. I think it was a good exercise for him to see how the shoe feels on the other foot, even though he's getting older now and isn't so quick to act out.
Here are a few other outtakes I considered, but none had the emotive weight that the submission carried, at least I think so. I also changed from the sepia tone to the bluish tone for a more "cold" feel.
Thanks to all of you who voted, commented, and encouraged me. I appreciate it SO much!

The series is wonderful! I left you comments on my two favorites of it.
Well, I never really felt that being bullied feeling, cause all my friends when I was little have always been the boys so I was pretty much protected :-)
but even though, your bluish photo just make the viewer feel the pain so much, and so well deserve the ribbon.
Congratulations on that, and thanks a lot for sharing!

I can remember being bullied as a kid, and you're right....It happens on the streets all the time. I really loved seeing your picture with the blue ribbon. I had decided not to vote on that challenge, for several reasons, but if I HAD voted I would have given you a ten for sure. Congrats on the win, and having a kid with friends that are helpful. |

What I like the best is looking at your earlier work, and seeing how far you've come so fast. You had a can just waiting to be opened, and I'm glad to see what's been spilling out :)

Your BLUE ribbon is very deserved Laurie, I'm sure all will agree. I scored it a 9 and picked it for the top spot (even though I did mention the cars, oops!). The pain you depicted resonates with almost everyone. You really connected on a deep level. Thanks for sharing the background story too. I see now why you chose the setting that you did :)
BTW, I see on your profile that one of your goals for 2005 is to score a couple of 7+ shots.... SO CLOSE this time at 6.915! I'm looking forward to seeing what else you come up with.
(Here's my comment, for anyone who is curious, I'll save you the trouble):
"Very effectively communicates emotional pain. Would like it better if the extreme background (the cars) were blurred to the point of not being recognizable. Still a ...9... on the strength of the subject - my top pick." |
