OK. I get that everyone hated this jellyfish from the score that it received, and I kinda expected it to do badly since it is quite different, but I was wondering if you can tell me why. I am curious what opinions are out there.

Yes, I know that it is grainy, but I think it gives the shot a deep sea feel. I am wondering if any others out there see "Art" in this. It reminds me very much of an artists display of watercolor paintings that I saw while in Hawaii years ago, but his name eludes me. Also, do you think the second version is any better than the first.

Thanks and, as usual, be brutal as you like. I can take it. :)

Two things come to mind; first, it isn't very "pink", and second the graininess gives it a "brutalist" feel that's at odds with the delicacy one expects from a luminous jellyfish. It's well-composed and a nice image. If you'd have tweaked the color a little more pink and neat-imaged it, I bet it would have done a lot better.

It's not the grainyness that is bothersome to me in this photo, it's more the flatness. It has the appearance that this is a photograph of a photograph of a jellyfish that was printed with a low quality printer. You may have been shooting this through thick glass which can be very difficult especially if there are a lot of reflections. Aside from this feeling of low quality, which may have been intentional but I don't think it works to add anything to this image in particular, I think the composition and colors are good and the subject is certainly interesting. I would be interested in seeing the original photo. I think the second one just looks blurrier.

I honestly do like it. But I agree that it's not very 'pink'. I like the loose curves of the composition and the way that it's brightest in the middle and gets darker towards the outside. Also, the colors work well together. To me, the photo a moody/spooky feeling that I like.

I think it's a great subject but the grain is hugely distracting. To my eye it makes it look like a photo of a painting. It just doesn't look quite real.

It doesn't bother me one iota that it's not very pink and that wouldn't have affected my vote.

The photo was the result of a flash misfire. The original wouldn't show you much of anything since it was mostly a black image with a few faint lines apparent.

These opinions are interesting. Keep um comin and thanks.

It looks like a painting to me, and I really like it. I agree with JPR about the flatness, and that's part of why it looks like a painting to me. The grain does it too.

But I like it. I don't think it'd work any other way. I didn't vote in the challange, and it's hard to say what I would have given you, but, as of right now, I think it's a really neat shot.

Hi Darlene--I do like the composition and colors of this a lot, and I see why you think it's painterly.

The sharpness is the issue for me. But there's a good fix for "painterly" photos that aren't sharp enough--the dry brush filter.

I ran it on your file (settings: size 0, detail:10 texture 1) and I think it comes out great. Normally, I would apply the filter and reduce opacity to about 13% and you wouldn't even see it as an "effect", but I liked this as is.

Let me know what you think.

I suspected the flatness may have been caused by retreiving information from a largely dark photo.

I think nshapiro's version makes a beautiful painting indeed.

I don't think you call it grain when it is a color shot. Noise is more appropriate. Strong verticle lines of noise.

I didn't vote on anything that wasn't pink in the Pink challenge so I skipped over this one but I think it would have gotten a three, based on the amount of noise, had I taken the time.

Neil, I was waiting for you to notice this. Wow, that's great! I may have to dust off the watercolors and actually take a stab at painting it after seeing that version. It probably wouldn't have improved the scoring, but it is very cool.

I don't really understand how this could be construed as not meeting the "Pink" challenge, since pink is the focal point color, but thank you all for your great comments, both for and against.
