I thought it was about time I try portrait shots and as it so happened my brother-in-law popped in. I think he has a real character face and he agreed to model for me.
Please tell me anything you like, good or bad, on how to improve.
I played around with levels in PS and the camera-raw plug-in to lose some of the yellow cast.
My main query right now is do I need flash or strobe lighting. This was done with 2x200w halogen lights.
1 bouncing off ceiling.
1 bouncing off white card in front and angled up at his face.
Did not use built-in flash.
Many thanks in advance.

I really like the shot. Lighting seems great, no eye glass shadows or reflections on the lenses & every thing is pretty sharp. Great shot indeed.
IMHO, play around with canavs size to see how changing the size of negative space effect the over all mood of the picture.

I agree! Very well done. Nice characterization of your in law. You should try some more of him. I think the camera likes him! PS: Your lighting is great!

| I would crop some off the right so that it's more balanced. Good and inventive lighting. |

Great shot. Love the lighting, focus, depth of field and expression. Only things I could see to possibly change would be a slight blur to the area that is in focus through his glasses under his right eye; there is a bright spot there that shows some pores on his face as larger than the rest of his face. If you blur that area slightly you keep the character you mentioned (and that I think others notice through your photo) bue you don't draw attention away from his eyes as much. The 2nd would be just a little more catchlights in his eyes would help to draw the viewer's attention there initially before they start to take in his whole face.
Good job and I think he'd be a wonderful subject.

Thanks for the input everybody. What will the addition of flash or strobes do then? Maybe I don't need them.
BTW: I did take a series, but this was the only other one I kept.
