If a morbid (in a Monty Python sort of way) Pain picture was submitted for the Pain challenge involving an animal or child as an integral part of the shot, would there be a negative bias in the scoring due to reasons of percieved 'cruelty' and gore? I mean, I'm talking about a shot that would be off the wall enough that it was obvious that in reality no harm whatsoever was caused to the subject. I have some humorous ideas that I can pull off with one or more of my (very loved, spoiled, and happy) pets, but would like to know your imput based on past experiences with judging of your pictures, how you've judged pictures of that nature in the past, or how you think you'd respond to such a photograph. Thanks!

Impossible to predict given the way things go here.

I think the key will be to make sure it does look staged, then you should be ok.

There will always be some that don't like a shot like that, but then there will always be someone who doesn't like any given shot.

I say just go for it :)

If it's any help, I suggested a shot idea to a few people that was along the lines you are talking about, and was met with *STIFF* resistance. :)

I am one of those people NOT into blood and gore. I get upset easily at cruelty or just plain misfortune. Bodily functions are something normal and natural, but don't send me into fits of hysterics when presented as a "joke"

On the other hand, when it is clear that the photo was staged and you did NOT disect a frog just to gross us out, or show me that you're soooooo clever that you can pull out a butterfly's wings, then I'll have NO problem with it.

Make it obvious, make it funny, and I think you'll get the same amount of inevitable 1s, 2s and 3s that all photos get.

Good luck!

I want to see some Kill Bill type blood and gore. If you have to pull a leg off of a cat I think it's worth it if only for the sake of ART.

Just hope there are no Greenpeace activists around.

It can be done as long as it's tasteful. Photos with blood and gore, etc. are hard to look at and easy to vote down.

So I'm discovering...the hard way.

It's a little disappointing to me that people would vote down an image in a challenge like "Pain" just because it's bloody, or whatever. What do they expect? If the challenge was "Fuzzy Feelings" and somebody posted a shot of a roadkill cat, I can understand why they would vote it down. I might not agree, but I can understand.

To date, I haven't voted in any challenges, but it's easy to see that many people here don't want to have their darker emotions touched by what they see in the challenges. My own entry in this one is getting hit because of the subject, not the quality of the image. Oh well... At least we're not being charged an entry fee. Then I might be upset.

That's an understatement...

To me (slightly off topic), darker images often seem cheesy and cliche so they might lose points because of that...

Aronya,

You're entering challenges, and not voting? Why? This iste can only work if there's a 2-way street running.

In the oops challenge I got mixed reactions on this shot. So, who knows what will happen now, with different folks voting.

Robert,

This is only my 2nd challenge, so it's not like I've been cruizing one side of the street for very long. Also, I fully intend to vote, but have held back in large part because I don't feel like I "know what I'm doing" when I take my own pictures, and don't want to give a lot of comments like, "I don't like it" and "Just a snapshot", etc.

My votes are coming, and when they do, TENS FOR EVERYONE!

vtruan,

I really like that shot. I thinks it's perfect for the Pain challenge. Then again, I love Monty Python, The Family Guy, the Darwin Awards, etc.

Well, at the very least you've inspired me to vote on all of the images and look specifically for a cat being mutilated!

Just a reminder that you should not discuss any particular entries while they're still being voted upon...

Well, then I shouldn't tell you to look for the score that's getting mutilated. Shhhh!

Hey Bear Music,

Looks like you've shamed me into voting (and commenting). The incredible responsibility of doing so hit me immediately, though; so far, no 10s. My apologies to those of you looking for that bump in your average.
02/10/2005 01:53:33 AM · #19
That's good to hear. Don't worry about the "responsibility"; just call 'em as you see 'em, you're only one vote among many and it all comes out in the wash.

Robt.

Well, the responsibility comment was tongue-in-cheek. I really AM giving 10s to everybody. (Where's that big sarcastic smilie icon when you need one?)

And what's good to hear? That guilt still works as a pressure tactic?
02/10/2005 02:14:50 PM · #21
Due to unfair voting tactics I have decided to change mine to balance things out. I will randomly choose 2 letters from the alphabet. I will then give all titles that start with those letters a 10. I will then do the same for 9-1...should balance them out in a nice non bias manner....

That's at least as fair as, "I don't like the subject matter of your pic. I'm giving you a 2."
