It's not a terrible score, but it isn't going to win a challenge. A 5.7 is only slightly above average on a scale of 1 to 10.

i've wondered about that myself for the past few years. it was initally brought up close to the beginning of the site...and i have questioned things occasionally since then. but you know, i dont really know what could be done about it, save not letting us vote on the challenge we enter..or dividing the challenges into two voting sections...i dont know, even though i think it would make for an interesting test, it just seems potentially really complicated. :)

I'm astonished at how many people seem to think orange is a shade of pink, and the surprising number of entries where "pink" is just one of many colors in the image, sometimes not even particularly prominent. I have no problem with desaturated images where pink is the only color, even if there's only a little of it, but in a lot of these the pink seems like an afterthought, or not even there at all, whereas another color altogether seems to be the dominant hue.

Or is it just me?

Robt.

I had the same problem. In fact, I thought my monitor must have been miscalibrated, so I viewed a few challenge entries on my husband's computer, and then also on our laptop. It's a shame about the oranges and reds because several of them are outstanding shots. If the authors of those shots had just adjusted the colors a bit...

Do me a favour and comment if this is the case, Robert and Judith...I'm thinking that my photo is suffering from being the wrong colour (most of the photo is orange, and pink is definitely not the most dominant hue, although it is in the section of the photograph which I find the most striking)...I'm getting no comments and an absolute crap score.

Oh, and I didn't adjust the colours at all on my photo...

I'll probably vote and comment tonight, and I will leave comments on those photos that I think aren't the color pink, or if I think the color pink isn't dominant enough.

With the way voting has been lately...Pink is probably my last
challenge.

Not before you tackle your goal #2, buster!
"2. To work on portraiture and enter at least one portrait shot.

Really, it would be a shame if we lost you over the low scores some folks hand out!

I can understand your frustration completely, but I am honestly confused, too, by your 6+ average score. I figure that we all know that DPC is harldly a pure, correct world and can't be taken too seriously (at least I don't or I would go nuts), so I hope we don't lose the chance to see your honestly great and original work due to this.

I'm seeing alot of purple and peach. Is it just me?

I think there is a lot of discussion on that in this thread. There is a lot of other colors. I was afraid that people would think pink could only be one particular shade or depth, but I never expected to see this much orange and other colors.

It's inevitable, I guess, when you consider that most people aren't using calibrated monitors, myself included.

I'm not using a calibrated monitor either... ugh.. I am so ticked off about this challenge. I considered PRIMARY to mean that pink would be the color that Stood Out, not that the whole damn photo should be pink... I am below 6 and I don't think I have ever taken a better photo... I never complain about challenges, but now I know why others do. People need to learn how to vote AND comment.

I guess what confuses me is that we all know the color of certain things, and these things aren't pink. And it doesn't seem as though the colors were even shifted to be made into pink.

I agree. I really wish people would leave comments. I'm at 4.2 and after 80 votes i only have one comment. How are you supposed to know what you should do differently if no one cares to comment? This is only my second entry, but i really thought it would do better, and so far it's done worse than my first which i wasn't even that happy with.

Granted the one comment that I got was really helpful and also gave me some insight into why it may be getting such low marks. I wish I could thank that person.

For the record, I am not voting "down" those that don't appear pink to me on my monitor. Unless it is obviously blue or something ridiculous, I am giving the benefit of the doubt.

You can in fact thank the person who left the comment. Some people send PMs during the voting thanking for comments, other feel you should wait until after the voting. If all you are doing is telling them that their comment was appreciated then by all means send them a PM thanking them for it, I would not worry at all about doing this during the voting.

I never use all caps, but OOPS!!

I just realized that the challenge description does indeed say that pink should be the "primary" colour...which is definitely not the case with my shot.

I guess I can feel a teeny bit better about that. I look forward to hearing some thoughts on my photo apart from the lack of overbearing pinkness though!

"Capture a photograph where the color pink is the primary color in the shot."

Pink isn't a primary color, so I took this description to mean that pink should play an important roll in your photo--not that the image had to contain more pink than any other color. So, I created an image in which there are several colors, but the pink portion is dominant. The focal point of the image is pink and it stands out from the rest of the objects in the photo. If that isn't good enough for the voters, then... well, W.G.A.F.

Well it's my first challenge. I'm conflicted about my lighting, I like my composition and subject though :)

I was really hoping for a little more, because I worked extremely hard for this one (being my favorite color and all I felt the need). ;o) Inevitably, it's falling...and falling...so I expect to be hovering at 6.0 at the week's end. However, I'm still way above my overall average so I really am tickled...pink! :o)

Mediocre 5.x score, but I expected it to do rather badly... worse than it is. Seems like the ones I think are barely worth entering are the ones that score better these days. I really don't get it.

I should have done my flower shot....I was determined not to do one. I went with something else and it's sitting on 4.6 what a bummer. It's a let down after coming off an avg of 6 in the last light challenge. I think maybe because my subject's true colour isn't pink but I made it that way had something to do with the low scores...:-)
And yes not one comment. I agree with the others, we'd love to know where the improvements lie, so bring on the comments please:-)

Decent score but mine seems to be one that people don't think is pink enough which is INCONCEIVABLE to me. My subject *is* pink in real life. The subject in the photo *is* pink on my computer. It's pink on a second computer I checked. The friends who have seen it call it pink. And not questionabley pink (imo)... it's pretty damn pink. Ummm.... ?

I started worrying slightly over this when people were questioning the entries, because honestly, I don't see any that didn't look pink at all. Some looked closer to magenta/purple but I still count that as "hot pink."

I don't even know what to say to this. I'm somewhere between annoyed and completely amused.

Is there a color calibration website people (myself included) can go to to double check our monitors? Not sure if that's even possible. I'd ask voters to give to perhaps give some slack due to difference in monitors. I most certainly did not photograph an orange subject for a contest titled "Pink."
