Please tell me what you think. I don't have proper studio lights so this was just taken with a desk lamp.
Thanks :)

The focus is excellent. The lighting is a bit harsh, and the shape is a little off. While overall you've got a decent shot, you might consider putting the rose in a bud vase so it's standing up (to retain shape) and lighting from a different angle (to reduce harsh shadows in between the petals). |

An alternative to a bud vase, if you want to keep the general perspective of the image, is to place a small stand (a cork, or bottle cap or something small) just below the base of the flower to raise it up off of the table.
The lighting needs to be defuse a bit -- try bouncing the light off of a white wall or paper -- or shining it through a then sheet of cloth. But the dark shadows between the petals is the main thing to work on, IMO.

I actually like the saddows in the dlower myself. It makes it look like a flower and I guess to me it gives it the 3D feel.
The lighting isn't really that bright, I used the curve tool in PS which is why it acutally looks so much brighter than what it really is. (It was actually a little dark to begin with)
I was thinking of perhaps using a photo stand to hold the flower up in as well. I think that could give it a simlar feel to a vase :)
Thanks for your comments though. I do apprecaite it.

I rather like it, Loz, and I'm particularly taken by the flattening, the sense of a casually tossed rose. I get tired of perfect roses. Tattered roses are more my style. I think with a little less saturation and a little toning down of contrast you've got a very nice image here.

I was just messing around with a red rose on a "black" background and it was very striking....you might try that. I still like yours a lot....nice job with a desk lamp! |

I can image how striking it would be :) I did some pink flowers on black a few years ago and I guess two of the winners of three did it also. I wil probably try it again some time soon.
I need to figure out my lighting for that one though. Its difficult when you don't have the right set up. But last time I tried I was using a my old 0.9mp kodak and I did ok, so i should be able to do a better job with the camera i have now.
Thanks Robert. I do agree with you.
I more or less wanted to work on reducing shaddows with objects placed on white paper as well. Its something I need to learn and I wanted to play around with the angle of light and just trying various things which is why I did it this way.
I also like it sitting on the table. I think it adds its own mood :)
