Well I kinda needed to let it out! LoL
I'm way too bored of shooting around the house, and it's really hard for me to go to some diff places, as I don't have a car.
I was already told that I should walk around with the camera, but I'm really concerned of doing that, walking around with a 500 dollar camera (my city is pretty safe, but hey, it still is Brazil!!!).
What I do is, I often bring it to work, take it to my girl's house, but I'm running out of ideas, subjects to shoot!
Got any suggestions? Or should I just kill myself?? |

Wrap your camera with your favorite color electrical tape (leave the needed features exposed, obviously) and I bet no one will think about stealing it off of you.

You can't be afraid to go out with your camera - or you're never going to get the shots you're capable of. I have a $1500.00 camera, and I live in NY. I've taken it to Yankees games, I've taken it to the city for shoots, and to Vancouver. I'm going to Georgia and Florida in a weeks time. Just guard it, and be careful. But don't be afraid to use it.

Well, show us what your town looks like, the faces of the people who live there, what they do and how they do it. How do they look in the morning, at high noon, in the evening? Is there anything typical scudsvillian about some of them? Show us some odd things, too, something we've never seen before. Show us some feeling. Any kisses exchanged in scudsville today, any drama that caught your attention? Did anyone die or laugh? Did you surprise anyone with your 500 dollar camera today?
If it is a dull town, how dull is it and how, exactly, is the dullness? If it is an ugly town, how is it ugly? If it is a pretty town, for god's sake, put something in it which isn't - a little neglect, a little rust, an old woman with a wart on her face.
How is your friend, the mechanic? Your old hang-out, what does it look like, now? Is it full of girls, does a bookie take bets there, squatters? Who is the most elegant woman in town? Do you have a cemetary? What do the men do, when they don't work? What's a typical Sunday activity? Have you seen anything out of place today, did anyone drop anything, any disputes?
How's the light on the plaza at six a.m.? Do the women smoke cigars? -O, could you also take some photos of people with hats?

Lots of options:
1) Take your camera where there are lots of people, it's generally safer
2) Find a buddy to go shooting with, or to accompany you, it's safer in numbers
3) Take pictures near the police station. ;)
But you couldn't tell from looking at your camera that it's worth a lot. They are going to go after the guys with the SLRs and white lenses anyway.
I was a little nervous after I got my one white lens, the 70-200mm, as I went to the bike path/river at night when there was nobody there and was shooting moon pics. I was indeed accosted--but by mosquitos, not muggers. And they weren't at all interested in the camera. |

Zeuszen that was inspiring, I copied your advice to notepad to pull out when I need a drink of creativity. Well done, thank you.
Scuds, while Brazil can be a bit woolier than my neck ot the woods I have found I feel a bit more secure since I now carry a monopod with my bag. While it wouldn't do much as a weapon, suddenly sprouting a two meter spike can look impressive enough to dissuade many interested parties. While precaution is laudable, if you are so feafull of losing it that you don't use it you may as well get rid of it. You are better off taking the risk of loss while enjoying it fully, than leaving it safe but unused in a closet. |
