Every now and again I get to make an easy decision about what NOT to list in my photo contests section at the proofpositive or contestguru websites
How about these guys who think they are doing us all a favor by letting us enter their contest. This one is free to enter ... but look at the BIG prize offering.
All those whose pictures are selected for publication on the cover will be given credit in the printed publication and a complementary copy of that issue.
Photographs/images selected to be used inside the journals will be given credit but will not receive the complimentary copy. Of course, everyone selected will know that they were part of something great!
How nice ... lets see, in exchange for photo equipment, time, effort, skills and talents ... they can't even pay the postage to send you a copy of the magazine.
Big of them, don't you think?

On the plus side there will likely not be much in the way of competition. |

Do you have to pay anything to enter those contests?
If not, then I really don't understand what you're complaining about.
I mean, publishing some journal costs a lot of money. Who's paying for that? and why would you expect them to give you a free copy just cause your photo was picked to be published?
I think that the publication of the photo along with the artist's name for itself is a prize nice enough.
If they are asking you to pay for entering those contests, then it is something else. In this case, they can keep their contests to themselves.

I listed some 'legit' contests HERE that you may want to add to your list...

This depends...alot of these contests say that they have the right to use the winning photo (or any entered) rights free for whatever they want to, whenever they want to, without paying. Now who has the prize?

I happen to disagree. These magazines are in "business" and have a budget for articles and photos. They are in business to make MONEY. Who's paying for that? The advertisers and the subscribers. Yeah it costs money to publish a magazine, but they wouldn't be doing it if they weren't making a profit.
The printing process for a magazine, is such that there are plenty of "extra" magazines produced at the end. The magazine publisher may get them for free or may have to pay "pennies each" for the extras.
If they use a photo in the magazine, surely they can afford to at least "pay" the photographer by spending a few cents on a magazine and maybe a dollar (they get magazine bulk rates) to send it.
Even that hardly compensates the photographer for his/her time, equipment, talent and the years spent learning how to take great pics.
I have sold photos to magazines, and have not only been paid good hard cash for my photos, but have also received as many as 100 magazines (for free) to use as tear sheets and in my portfolio.
