I've noticed a couple photos that seem to have spot editing. I didn't think that was allowed with 'basic editing.' If I am mistaken, and there is a way to enhance just the color of a sign and nothing else within the rules could someone please correct me. |

If you have a photo of a stop sigh, you can legally use the hue/saturation tool to desaturate all colors but red in the image. Ditto the a Yellow sign, desatting all but yellow. As long as the desaturation is applied to the entire image without any selection being made it is legal. This is actually the ideal subject for basic-rules desaturation projects, as road signs tend to be monochromatic and stand out from their backgrounds.
Or, oh yeah, you can leave everything as is but bump UP the red, or the yellow, for a hyper-saturated effect on the sign.

You can use hue/saturation and colour balance, providing you do it to the whole photo. In this way it is possible to change the photo quite dramatically but still within the basic rules. It is actually fun to play around with those tools. Of course if you change a colour (shift it) it effects the whole photo, so it is most effective when you have something that is a dominant colour in the image. Street signs often lend themselves to this. Several people have used this technique to selectively desaturate all colours except one. It is perfectly legal within the basic rules because you are changing the whole photo. You can also play with channel mixer.....The basic editing restrictions are actually pretty fun to work within at times, and creativity can often flourish from playing with the adjustment tools. |
