my Old and New deserved better. I shot it the way I did to give it a Wheres Waldo feel to it. |

I agree with the voters. I do see the old and new but it's not what I would call an old and new photo. I would give your photo a 5 and a 6 if the closest lightpost was straight.
I agree with you when you say "Study photos for more than 5 seconds" though.

With around 250 entries and 15secs a photo thats already an hour of "review and vote" time.
I'm new here so I can only speak from my limited experience, but I guess it shows how important it is submit high impact shots.
The two things I learnt from my first challenge, (Old and New), is that first impressions rule and that voters won't spend alot of time looking at each shot.
Best of luck with your next entry.

Speaking for myself, I studied it for a lot more than 5 seconds, because it's in many ways an interesting picture. But I was utterly baffled as to how it met the challenge. Even after reading your description, I can't see it that way. You say the juxtaposition is more obvious at a larger scale, but of what possible use is that to us voters?
You say in your comment that that you wanted a "where's waldo" feel to it. Let me see if I've got that right; you DELIBERATELY hid the references to old and new, and you expect the voters to take the time to seek them out and make sense of them? That's downright silly.
It's a nice shot; it might have done decently in "light", but in this challenge it didn't have a prayer because it's utterly obscure in terms of "old and new". In fact, I wondered if you had entered your "light" image int he wrong challenge; this is how confused I was by it.

I understand where you are coming from and I did not vote in that challenge. I would probably have given you a 4, mainly because its a nice photo that does not meet the challenge.
You will find here that hidden or implied meaning for a challenge do not do well. It really must be in the face of the voter as soon as they open your photo. That said it really depends on if the vote means a great deal to you. Surely if your happy with your photo that is the most important part.

My photo is easier to distinguish in full size. I didnt realize when I downsized it how much more difficult it gets to see details. |

you know bear, I kicked myself when the light challenge came out and It was too late to submit my old and new photo so I decided on using it. I thought people would recognize the vintage lightposts across the street. But in vga size it was tough...thanks for voting and thanks for the comments... |

I don't think looking at it for more then 5 seconds is really going to help. I still could not make out the older lamp posts you talked about. |
