I'm in the process of trying to improve my captioning/ cataloging and asset management in general.

I've started using IMatch and it seems pretty good so far. One thing I'm still struggling with a bit is the best directory arrangement for images, to easily enable captioning, cataloging and finding images efficiently.

For each 'event/shoot' I have a directory - year-month-day-caption and
then within that directory, I have an 'orginals' (raw files) an 'edits' (psd with layers) and a 'prints' (final TIFF or JPEG versions)

Each file in a directory is titled year-mont-day-caption_xxx where xxx is a 3 digit number.

This all works reasonably well, but when it comes to cataloging I now have at least 2 files that I want to maintain, the original RAW/JPEG and the edited PSD file and would like to maintain captioning info on these too, I suspect.

Haven't had a whole lot of experience in IPTC captioning or keywords so was looking for suggestions/ annecdotes/ experiences on an easily automated flow. What I have works quite well for one or two files, but I currently have 15,000 images after editing/ deleting bad shots that I want to organise.

Thoughts ? (other than I should have started 3 years ago...)

I use iView Profor cataloging and captioning, etc., for the last 5 years.
The first thing I do after downloading off the camera is put them in the Originals 2005 (now) catalog and caption, keyword and my info on the original and then export that metadata back out to the file. I am in the process of making more "automation" for it by having different saved keyword, category and so forth lists.
Now that the metadata is back in the original, it travels with it when editing. Gotta keep a copy of ANY I thnk I might want to use in a challenge though...to be safe)
For alot of past pics, as in your case, is tougher. You can do a basic sweep of them and choose all the ones that fall into certain categories or events (THIS IS WHAT I HAVE HAD TO DO WITH FAMILY PHOTOS) or people, select them all and then add a group set of keywoords, etc. Over and Over! Not sure if there is any other way to do it, except one by one.

Are you using IPTC fields to store the keywords etc ? Do you keep originals, edited versions and finished versions, or just originals ? How do you migrated catagories etc in iView to each of these derivative versions ?
