I need to buy a flatbed scanner for scanning photos in high quality. Budget approx: 600 euros. I don't know much about scanners. Which brand and model do you suggest to buy? Which ones should I avoid? |

Are you going to be trying to scan any negatives or slides? |

No, I have a very good negativ scanner for that. |

The higher-end Epson and Canon scanners are all good choices. |

THIS scanner would be a good choice. There are better and more expensive models, but I have one that is a model below this (and a couple generations behind it) that makes beautiful scans...

I'd also like to chime up your scanning software can help with the end result a lot too. I like VueScan myself, it lets you do some things like multi-pass scans to improve the quality of the scan.
Silverfast is also nice. |

Those software packages usually cost more than the scanner :)

yeah Silverfast is super expensive as I recall, but Vuescan didn't seem too bad, especially not for what it does, IMO. Besides, he does seem interested in getting good quality, so he shouldn't skimp on the software.
You wouldn't buy a 3.4GHz HT Pentium 4 and then run DOS on it...well not unless there was something really wrong with you in the head. :)

The scanning software that came with my Microtek is pretty darn good. It gives me a lot of control. I have, however, nothing to compare it with as far as quality is concerned. The results I get with it are fine for my needs. Other needs may require additional software though.

That may be, the quality seems to be all over the place software-wise.
But I figure if the guy is willing to dump that much coin on a scanner, it probably isn't a bad idea to spend some of it on the software...see above example. :)
