I'm wondering why my entry in the "faceless" challenge
scored below 5.
When I submitted it I thought that the photo of a priest doing window shopping of womens' clothing is rather funny and would score reasonably well (not a ribbon-level, of course). Is it because people didn't realize it was a priest, and the title failed to guide them, or it's not funny, or just the photo is simply not good? Any comments would be really appreciated.
While we are at it, would you think this photo
(which was my other choice for the challenge) would score any better? |

I didn't see a priest, for sure. That's one problem. It's just a fairly lackluster snapshot of a dude looking in a shop window, basically. Had you cropped out the wall on the left and some small amount of the foreground, the composition would be much more dynamic. That light wall is a real eyetrap, and the figure's so centered it's all static...
The second photo, IMO, is so much better there's no comparison. It's almost palpable in its poignance, and the light is beautiful.
Hope this helps.
Robt.

I'd say it's not obvious -- in the time generally allotted by DPC voters -- that it is a Catholic priest. Most people recognize them by the white part of the collar in front, and the cassock is also not obviously different at first glance from loose pants.
That said, I think Pit Stop is a lot stronger for me, both because of the better lighting/color/focus, but even more for the empathy/connection with the subject -- a better plan than humor for getting a high score here. |

Where are we getting all these fine Euro pictures. Are we in Italy?

Nope, can't tell it is a priest. I probably would have given it a 4, maybe a 5 but I probably would have given you pit stop a 7. The lighting is great and it is much more interesting. However if your priest pic had been more obvious and had the great composition as Pit Stop then I am sure it would have scored much better. |

Didn't know it was a priest, nor that it was a womans store. Looked like a man looking in a department store window at something unseen. I remember moving on wondering what I didn't know.
Agree with others, the Pit Stop has a lot more artistic appeal and a strong theatrical type look. |

I agree with Robert - I suspect I almost always agree with Robert, actually - but, even though I looked at the shot two or three times, i had no idea that was a Priest. The second shot, however, beyond those connotations mentioned, also holds references to a consumption-driven society, and the choices inherent in that, and is a marvellous piece of work. That said, I don't guarantee it would have scored better - comments in a forum can be deceptive about the rating of your shot.

I didn't realise it was a priest, although I was confused by the fact that a man looked like he was whereing a dress, which kind of made teh womans clothing things not seem that bad.
I am not really a snap shot kind of person so I admitt I didn't score this one that high. It really didn't capture me like some of the others did.
I tend to like photos that seem to have more challenge in them as well, like photos that someone has put a lot of work into.

I did see the priest and I figured out what he was doing. But because of the position it's shot from, it doesn't work well. It's more like a draft of the concept than the final image.
I think the other image Pit stop is way better. I like the lighting tones and the whole atmosphere created in it. |

After looking at all the rated shots, there were many that were really underated this time. I was surprised that a number of great shots in the 5s and not 6s or greater. Tough raters I guess.

thank you all for very thorough answering my questions!
I am absolutely sure that it was a priest having seen him both from the front and back, but I could not take a photo of him fom a much different angle without violating the rules of the challenge :), besides I could not control his posture and lighting since it was really a candid photo, not a setup.
I myself like the pit stop photo a lot more, but I thought that a dark quiet photo would not do too well here. oh well, better luck next time.
Thanks a lot again, guys, I really appreciate it! |

It's a nice shot, but I'd have never known he's a priest if I hadn't read your description. And I didn't notice he was looking at women's undies either :-) If those things had been a bit more evident I think it would've done much better. |
