Yep it is the same I think.

I add borders so that I do not resample the image -- I pretty much follow Patella's routine, except I'm willing to upload a large file and let the printer size it down for smaller prints. But then super-sharp detail is rarely a feature of my photos from the beginning...

I also figure if the border is crooked, or the customer doesn't like it, they are free to trim it off or cover it with a traditional mat board.

I crop the image to the size/shape I want, and then add borders with Canvas Size up to the next-largest standard size print.

I generally upload images at 8x10 but I send a 460dpi file. This allows a 230 dpi 16x20 from the image I send...

It's a preference thing... I don't know that one way would be better than another :)

So John, you size your photos all the way up to 3680x4600? That's a LOT of upsizing!

My original starts out at near 256dpi. I do resample up to 460 and I never resample over 2x the original dpi. The results are great :)

Did I make a mistake? I just uploaded all of mine as 72 dpi .tif but there are enough pixels for 300 dpi 8 x 10, etc. Should I have sized it as 8 x 10 @ 300 dpi before uploading? Is it going to make a quality difference?

the embdeed "dpi" of a photo doesn't matter much. as long as the actual pixels are there that are necesasry (ie, a 300 dpi 8x10 would be 2400*3000), it should be fine. Since the dpi will change depending on what resolution you'll be printing (600dpi at 4x5, and 150 dpi at 16x20 for a 2400*3000 photo) the embedded dpi in the file is pretty much ignored and the actual pixel dimensions are examined.

Please Help!!!!

I have been trying to add the border, read the previous answer to how to add a border, but I still don't know how to do it. I have got the cropping right and the aspect ratio without the border, then I go back, add a border and then try the constrained aspect ratio crop again with the border, but the ratio and crop size is different. Please help, I have been trying for 48hrs, getting nowhere and getting seriously frustrated!!! What am I doing wrong? Thank you for any help!!!

I'll be happy to help -- what program are you using, and what kind of border do you want to add? If you want, put your cropped original and the bordered version you have now into a ZIP/STUFFIT file and email it to me and I'll check it out later tonight...
