That's the whole point of the site... the "challenge" is to take a great photo meeting the challenge description within the dates specified. ;o)

Yes, it is nice to have a weekly challenge, but I have so many photos in stock that I find myself going back and re-taking photos to obide challenge rules. I guess it is good to have that "weekly assignment" But for the current challenge LIGHT, I had this one photo that I know would of scored real high, but cant submit it. I'll just have to come up with something new! |

that's the whole point! it really does help level the playing field. and, it really makes sense to abide by the rules. every month, we have people who do try to sneak in something from their 'stock' collection, only to be dq'd... |

There are lots of other sites on the internet that run photo contests without the time-taken restriction that dpc has. Try a Google on photo contest or something similiar. And don't forget to post it here if you pick up a win.

I understand that's what many people like about this site, but I'm sure many like me find it has the negative side effect of wasting time to retake a perfectly good shot.
Architecture is a good example: I took lots of nice architecture shots for the B&W challenge, and was only able to use one. Should I go back and reshoot? No, I passed on that. Time is valuable.
As a result of the Best of O4, I actually went back through a lot of old shots, and processed a few. It was very nice to use the time to go through and finish some old images. I don't have time to do that and to participate in new DPC challenges.
I personally think having a monthly best of the month competition, like best of 04, would be a great addition to the site and a great way to get feedback on images that would otherwise not qualify for a challenge. I think a fair number of us would mainly participate in that, and forego most of the weekly challenges.
And for those of you who will say, fine there are other sites where you can do that, you are right. But is that what DPC wants us to do? Spend our time and energy supporting another community, or this one? |

I have loads of Architecture shots, but I found it fun going and shooting again. Even if it was the same subject there are always different ways to shoot it at different times of the year and day,.

How about, instead of another full-blown challenge, requiring voting and all, we had a monthly "gallery" to which each member could post any one photo (or with whatever restrictions you want) for commentary and feedback.
I actually think the comments people get in the "Individual Photo Forum" are better quality because they are not part of justifying a numerical score, they are "pure" comments made out of interest in the photo. But having 200 competing threads is impractical ... |

I think that would be good, and way better than it is now.
On the other hand, getting numerical ratings on an anonymous image means people can at least tell me quickly (and honestly because it's anonymous) whether they liked it (they usually don't ;). I find that useful feedback too, even if it's hard to swallow sometimes.
I don't think a ribbon is necessary, and maybe it's better without one. People can comment or simply rate an image. Without the competition, people won't be rating them relatively, so you can get an honest idea whether they like them or not.

I'd be all for a monthly or quarterly "Best of" challenge where any image shot in the past month or quarter could be submitted in the same way that the "Best of 2004" challenge operated.

I'll second that - but PLEASE don't drag it out over a whole month again. A challenge of pre-existing photos should have a shorter submission period, not a longer one. |

There were 2 reasons for the long submission period - first, some members had thougsands, even tens of thousands, of photographs to sift through to pick their "best of." That takes tons of time. Second, being the beginning of the year a lot of people go on vacation. For a "special" challenge like this we wanted to ensure that anyone who wished to participate had the opportunity. Spanning two weeks helps ensure that happens.
