I have noticed that many of the less experienced members complain of not getting enough comments to improve their shots. How about doing a challenge where the subject is very simple such as a still life of 2 apples.
This way the imagination/setup/lighting will really show how capable the photographer is and thus we will give better hints/comments on improvements.
The really excellent photographers and those owners of state of the art cameras will find this a real challenge since they must show the difference between amateur/semi professionals/professionals and wannabe amateurs.

I was thinking along the same lines last night. Something more specific.

Gurry, this is an excellent suggestion. It would allow us to finally compare apples to apples... ;-) (sorry - couldn't resist , but I do think it's a great idea!!)

One problem is that people already complain of "vote fatigue" when they see five or six similar subjects in a challenge. If everyone shot a still-life with two apples I think the score would depend more on how early the photo comes in the queue than actual quality.

I'd rather encourage creativity than solely conduct an exercise with both a specific technique and subject.

...but do think it's worth a try. Knowing the ground rules for this type of challenge (i.e., that the subject be the same for everyone), I think most people would understand that they're to concentrate on the composition, lighting, and other technical aspects. I also think that restricting the subject this way doesn't necessarily mean that creativity is discouraged. To the contrary, this may help to focus creative energies in a way that's more instructive to the audience (participants and viewers)...

...maybe.

In my experience as a photography teacher, creativity is ENCOURAGED by posting strict limitations on subject matter. The broader the range of options available, the more facile the solutions become, in the main.

I'd love to see a challenge like this, I'd love to see one like this every month. "Photograph some portion of a car at rest" "Photograph 2 apples, making them the subject of your photo" "Photograph a ballpoint pen, only ONE pen." Whatever...

I'm sure everyone has seen American Idol song contest and seen some of the awful attempts of people who try their luck. I'm not saying that there is any comparison between photography and singing but it's clear that some of the contestants just don't see where they are going wrong. The difference here is actually you can learn how to take photos but if you don't have the voice you cannot sing, however much you practice.

By doing a challenge where everyone is on the same project, you will clearly see the mistakes or lack of inventiveness on your part and then try to improve. Voter fatique is a problem but it would be nice to give it a try.
