For the FROM ABOVE challenge I tried to fly a camera on a kite to shoot a photo of the country side from on high. I slammed a small computer controlled servo box together and set it to take a photo every 30 seconds. The Kite Camera is shown below.

Unfortunately the wind was not very cooperative but I did get a shot with an interesting strange side effect.

Best I can figure is the low end cameras don't have a true shutter so they read each line of the sensor while it's looking at the view. The kite was moving the camera laterally so each line of the sensor was "seeing" a different view. This might be fun to tinker with to see what effects I can intentionally create.

By the way, I'm not entering the challenge since I couldn't get a decent shot so I'm not compromising my entry by posting this.

I'm glad to hear you didn't fly your 707 around!! You are much braver than I sending up a lower end camera like that.

LOL, I went out and bought a $30 Aiptek Pencam and did the same thing -- well, without the timer servo (I just used the camera's 10 second timer and a friend) -- and came to a similar "line-by-line scan" theory. I've decided to call this camera my digital pinhole camera.

My results are even more warped than yours -- I'd thought seriously about entering them because I personally think they're really cool, but I knew I'd hear cries of, "It's not from above," and "This is clearly some kind of Photoshop filter."

There are also a few other shots I'd taken last year using a disposable camera and a kite camera kit in that same folder.

I agree with your assessment of the reaction here, although titling it "What Do You Expect From A $30 Camera Taped To A Kite?" might have given you a fighting chance...

You should pop over to Kite Aerial Photography by Professor of Architecture C. Benton at UC Berkeley.

Speaking of unexpected effects, I took this photo of a backlit flag yesterday...

Paul,

Might have worked with a title like that, but since I fall in the "titles shouldn't explain a pic" camp... *grin*

I had a quick look at the Aerial Photo site, and bookmarked it for more perusal later.

The flag shot is truly different. Quite a halo.

GeneralE,
I did a lot of research on the web and the link you posted is one of the ones I visited. I designed/built one of the Picavet leveling systems for the camera also. I never knew there was an entire hobby based on cameras and kites (they even have their own film vs. digital wars going on in the hobby). I just need to find a little bit bigger kite and I'll go back out and get the shots I wanted. Absolutely awesome effect on the flag shot. Is that straight from the camera or did you do any post processing?

Patella,
Great minds think alike eh?
Pity you didn't submit anyway. To heck with the wankers who can't see beyond the end of their own noses and figure just because they can't do it then it must be illegal. I'm sure many would have enjoyed the abstract nature of the shot, I did. The effect is unique so thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments! The flag is slightly processed: tone curve and cropping. Here's a link to the re-sized but otherwise unaltered original image.

My eyes can apparently "stop down" more than the camera -- I could see the flag in color and the sun as a distinct disk through it. Next time I'll try it with a polarizing or ND filter (except my camera doesn't take filters). I can pretty easily recreate the shot...

I was thinking the same thing. What resourcefulness! I'm very impressed seeker!
