I've been asked to attend an event that will take place in a hotels banquet facility. The event will have the mayor of Toronto speaking, and I want to make sure my pictures are the best possible quality.
I will be using my Pentax ist DS. I am an amatuer photographer, and only have the 18-55 mm lens available to me.
Can anyone suggest the best possible settings to use to produce the best pictures with my camera?
Thanks for your help |

Not so much camera settings - avoid camera shake. If you haven't attended these functions, get there early, choose your locations, and ask the mayor and a small entourage to give you 1 minute of their time in your chosen location. Watch out for plants growing out of people's heads.
Good luck, and post the results.

The range on that kit lens is really gonna limit you unless you have the chance to get "up close and personal".
Have you considered hiring an additional lens(es)for the event ?

wonder if a camera shop in your area could rent you a lense for the night?
i too would agree that 18-55 would limit you in what you can shoot. a mid-range zoom would be a big help for sure.
