I will be shooting a couple's engagment pictures next week. Pictures will be done in a outdoor enviroment. My challenge is the female subject is about 3 inches taller than the male subject. Any advice on type of shots you would take? Poses?

Make her sit and him stand? Or make them both get down on the ground and cuddle? :)

I dont have any experience with this but I have been reading a number of portrait books lately and I can tell you what I've read.

For the height thing you'll likely want to position him either standing on something if you're not going to do full length shots or if you can find some place for them to sit down with different leveled tiers like steps that could work also. Of course she may also be the more dominant person in the relationship and may want to loom over him in the images.

The two main poses I believe are where one of them is against something like a wall or a tree and the other person is placed facing them, usually very close and touching. The other is where the taller person stands at the back and the shorter person stands in front of them with both bodies facing toward the camera, which is sometimes called the prom pose.

I guess the important part is having them connect with each other - similar color clothing, head tilt, eye contact, touch, anything suggesting initimacy.

You might ask them if they are comfortable with that. If it is no problem for them that she is taller why should it be a problem for the photographer?

I agree with the below. In fact, this presents an opportunity to take some playful shots that buck the stereotype of what a couple should look like.

If there is a problem and they want the height to be more even, and she's wearing a gown with a fuller skirt or train, perhaps he could stand on a step or a phone book or something and their pose/her gown could be strategically placed so that no one is the wiser?

Judging by the fact that they are marrying, this is a moot point because it doesn't bother them or anyone they know. Either way, have fun with the pics and post some for us! :o)

Go with the flow, obviously they have accepted their height difference to some degree or they wouldn't be together. If they want to make it look like they are closer in height, pose them on a slight incline and put him on the uphill side. They might even want to reverse that to exaggerate the difference as something playful. Another option is to have them sitting or laying down.

In our bare feet, my wife is slightly taller than me. Put her in heels and I start to look like the dwarf that married Snow White........
